Unhappy Dexter recall!?

Hi all,
The plan was to leave tomorrow morning to pick up our new Airstream at the dealer. We ordered a flying cloud 25 FBQ.
At 6 PM today our sales rep called us to tell us that she had just received word from Airstream that Dexter was recalling the axles. She had no other information at the time, she just wanted to let us know not to show up tomorrow and will get back with us at a later date. She said she had no other information as to parts/problem/how to fix.
Has anyone heard anything about this?
We are now considering keeping what we have.
Big bummer.

Yes, our dealer just called us and told us that Airstream issued an emergency order that prohibits dealers from releasing new trailers indefinitely. Apparently the Dexter axle is faulty, and there are now multiple reports of Airstream wheels falling off. They don't know when this defect originated, but believe trailers already delivered are also at risk, and so they may issue a recall. So heads up if your trailer is on order or you took delivery of one this year. The factory halted all shipments, and is stopping installation production of axles. We were supposed to pick up our new 2022 Flying Cloud trailer this Saturday. The dealer cannot release it to us, and is awaiting information from the Mother Ship. Future delivery timelines will also be delayed. The dealer will have more info. In the meantime, we're on indefinite hold. I would recommend that you wait for further info before giving up after such a long wait for a new AS. It's no different from an auto manufacturer issuing a recall. They will get a solution in place and instructions out to the dealers for how to fix it.

holly <>#$#<$!

Dexter are widely deployed product, high quality, highly reliable, sound design, proven over 100s of millions of miles, etc... I wonder what they changed in manufacturing process, product design or both to cause such an issue.

It's like the one thing on a trailer that does not fail.....

Sorry to hear about this for all those who are affected with delayed deliverys or have received a trailer with axles in question.

found this quickly via google search (grand design website):

Wonder if this applies to replacement axles like I received for my 1971 earlier this year?

Isn't this issue number 2 with Dexter ? First being out of round drums ? Getting tired of recalls, wife's car just got and so did our Spyder.

What’s the year model range that’s impacted by the recall?

I did a quick search on nhtsa but didn’t pull anything. They must be moving on this before the recall is official to stem the issue.

Ditto. Nothing recent from Dexter on the national recall database.

Our Globetrotter 27FB Twin was supposed to be out of the factory on June 29th.

Seems like that is unlikely now.

Great. I leave in 1 week for a 6000 mile trip. My Airstream was delivered mid-April. This is our first real trip, outside of the 500+ mile trip back from the dealer. Like I needed another thing to think about. Ugh!

Perhaps contact your dealer for more information?

Would you prefer they hid defects and quality spills, like bygone decades? Recalls are a good thing.

A letter was issued to All Dealers 6/16 from Airstream- VP of sales.

I posted the axle issue here and it was moved to the Axle page and would be
unknown. This is a safety issue where a wheel washer can become dislodged
causing a wheel to come off..

We are scheduled to pick up our new FC on Tuesday and am awaiting answers now.

Please be aware..
I assume, from your brief description of the issue, that the washer in question is the spindle washer. If so, this shouldn't be a huge deal. If it is an inspection to ensure they are there, the held units would be released pretty quickly. If the washer(s) are missing, it is a matter of...possibly just procuring and installing....if flatbedded (small units). If the trailer was towed, it would probably just be a matter of potentially replacing (at most) some or all of the bolt on parts on the axle. It is possible, but I think unlikely, that axles will have to be replaced.

Hopefully, you are correct.
I understand that Dexter was at the factory yesterday to assess the issue.
No fix has been determined yet.
One customer has already lost a wheel while traveling and sheared off some wheel studs, causing damage to the coach..
