I would measure 3 X to be sure. I do not know if the frame width changed form the early 70's to the mid 80's.

I have a 1973 manual and 99% ot the stuff in this manual seems to be the same as my 1969.
Shows part #7320008 less brakes and hubs.
Part # 01047 for the 3200 lbs axle complete.

I can't go look at my A/S and measure as it is 503 mi due east of me.

Garry.

First of all the rating for your trailer axle is 3200 pounds. The 82 trailer is 4000 pounds.

An increase beyond 10 percent is risky.

Secondly, the axle tube on the 4000 pound axle is larger, and will not fit within your axle mounting plate.

Should you choose to enlarge the axle mounting plate cutout, to fit the 4000 pound axle, you will have weakened the axle mounting plate for the 69 trailer. That could lead to metal failure, at an early date.

The brackets are basically the same, as well as the bracket width dimensions.

Darn

Thanks Andy,
The old saying, if it sounds to good to be true it probably is. I found a wrecked 82 and was hoping for a one to one swap. Right now I won't use my A/S due to badly worn axles the hubs, brakes and bearings are good.
Safety is a concern and while I could save a bunch of money I'll pass on this one
