Axle Replacement in Indiana

Was all set to order a new axle for my 1961 Tradewind from Colin Hyde, when he let me know it was not just a bolt off, bolt on installation. Because AS decided to rather "ingenious" in 1961, the removal and install will probably include cutting, welding, bolting and a lot more intolerant placement. Let's just say WAY more involved than my skill set. Are there any shops in the Indiana/Michigan/Ohio area that are set up to do a replacement on a 1961? The trailer is currently at my house in Indianapolis. Need to get this done pretty soon as do not want the trailer to endure an Indiana winter.

When you include Ohio, simply make an appointment with Airstream.

But, if you order the axle complete with 12 inch self adjusting brakes, and have it shipped to Airstream for them to install it for you, you will save a bunch of money.

Give P&S trailer service in Helena, Ohio a call. They are on Rt. 6 between Bowling Green and Fremont. Call Steve @ 419-638-6261.

I just had a great conversation with Kent at Northside Trailer Sales in Zionsville 317-769-2460 (north side of Indy). They are a Dexter distributor, and he was very knowledgeable about axles. I'm taking my 66 Overlander for him to measure for new axles the week after labor day.

Appreciate the lead. I am taking my trailer to Kent at Northside week after next. Will see how it goes! You are right, he was quite knowledgeable and realistically knew this would not be a "set in stone" install. Will advise how it goes!

Hello Beatrix 1
I am most interested in purchasing your removed brake parts especially/specifically the drums. They are easy to remove and easy to ship.
Please get in touch with me regarding this.
Kind Regards
Carl

After a slight delay due to my MB GL320 tow vehicle deciding to have an "episode" with a particulate filter, finally got my AS dropped off at Northside trailer. Seems he now has two AS at the same time! Will report how it goes.

Beatrix1 - Were you happy with your axle install? would you recommend that dealer?

More than happy. Kent was great to work with. He ran into several challenges with the axle replacement, due to 1961 being a transitional year. He did a great job fabricating the mounting plates and replacing the axle. And kept his sense of humor, as well as stuck to his estimate!

I also had Northside replace the axles on my 66 Overlander, and was very happy with their service! I went with complete axles, and they pretty much just bolted on with the exception of welding on the shock mounts. Kent and his team did a nice job, at a reasonable price, and I'd recommend them to anyone looking for axle replacement.
