The stock axle was made by Henschen and had a marketing name for their rubber torsion axles of Dura-Flex. Henschen was at one time owned by Airstream. Henschen became unprofitable because there was not enough volume in axle sales so Airstream sold the company. Eventually the buyer GKN could not make it profitable either and closed the Henschen company a number of years ago. Dexter Axles is the major manufacturer in the torsion axle business

Dexter supplies rubber torsion axles through a net work of dealers. Dexter does not exactly sell retail.

There are a couple of sources that sell axles. And the Airstream dealership network. However most dealers would prefer not to sell these. And that may apply to a number of trailer dealerships that have an agreement with Dexter.

There is some what of a skill set in ordering an axle correctly for the Airstream trailers. Most companies that d this on a very infrequent basis have a high chance of not getting it correctly.

So there are a couple of sources that do this frequently and they are overwhelmed. Hence your lack of replies on this low volume mainly custom order type of assembly.

I had very good success with a local family-run trailer sales and auto parts place. I made the necessary measurements and they ordered the axles for me based on my order form. If you can make the measurements, find a parts place that does business with Redneck Trailer Supply. They are a Dexter distributor. My place gets a truck from Redneck twice a week so there was no freight charge.

Here is the order form I used to order my axles.

My 2002 Classic and my 2001 Safari both had Henschen axles. I had to elongate one mounting hole on each axle bracket to get Dexters to fit in the trailer mounting brackets that were designed to mount Henschens.

The new Dexter's are slightly different resulting in a need to modify the shock brackets to make the shocks fit properly. The swing arms on the Dexter axles were about 3/8" further from the frame than the arms on the Henschens. This was discovered after the axles were delivered but caught and a fix suggested by my installer which we implemented on the fly. He cut the shock mount and spaced it out about 3/8" with some steel bar.

That modification is depicted in the third picture in Post #60 of this thread:

The title of the thread is Disc Brake Conversion Success. Don't let that fool you - I changed the axles and converted to disc brakes at the same time.
