2008 Safari Sport 22ft
Just took a look at the new Safari Sport 22 ft today. Its nice to see they have resurrected the tambour roof lockers.
I looked in the closet at the weight placard for the trailer's weight and was very disappointed.
Safari 22ft dry weigh 3,545 lbs......trailer axle GVW rated at 4000 lbs
26 gallons water 217
10 gallons LP 40
Net cargo carrying capacity WITHOUT options is 198 lbs.
This trailer, an 2008 model of course, was laden with all the options, you know dealers always add all options, Air Conditioner, Microwave, TV/DVD, and Patio ZipDee awning. These options weigh a total of 189 lbs per Airstream Customer Service today. So, do the math, and it leaves you with "9" pounds for food, clothing, and personal effects.
I thought maybe we could trade our Bambi Quick Silver in for a Safari Sport, but Bambi has the same weight issues. We have never used our Bambi Quick Silver because loaded it will be overweight. It has a 3500 lb rated axle, and with water, LP, and dishes, it weighs in a 3,480 lbs. Add clothing and personal effects and it will be over the 3500 lb axle limit, not to mention the dynamics at work with the trailer moving
Now I am waiting for an Aistream engineer to call to see if I can order a Canadian spec'd trailer (CSA) since they have an axle rated for 4500 lbs.
Shame on them!

Axle weight does not include tongue weight of 10%-15% of GVW. So, there is at least another 400 pounds of carrying capacity at 10%, and 600 pounds at 15%,

Nope, I don't count that. Once you place a weight distributing hitch into the mix, some of the tongue weight will be tranferred to the trailer's axle, and some to the tow car. I don't know what the "true" tongue weight is because I would need to load that trailer and weigh it. I don't think the dealer will allow me to experiment.

Net cargo carrying capacity WITHOUT options is 198 lbs. ???? Do heavier rated axles increase the weight of the Airstream substantially?
Why make a unit with little to no carrying capacity?

Again, even if you assume 50% of the weight on the tongue is going back to the axle (and it shouldn't be that much), you still will have 200-300 pounds of stuff you can load without overloading the axle. The trailer is designed for weekends use, not long-term camping, 300 pounds is a lot of clothes, popcorn, and twinkies.

the posted 4000lb limit c'bus is referring to is the gvwr, as in the whole shebang...
and the ncc is very specifically stated as is...
so the figures he quotes are correct.
you can carry a small lunch IF full fluids included and options as expected.
this issue was discussed in another thread on the ss models...
http://www.airforums.com/forums/f206...ing-33185.html
where azfly' picked up on the wimpy ratings...
and i would INSIST on the higher rated axle/csa rating if ordering a unit....
some q/s folks have changed out axles and now that you've been burned once....
don't let 'em do it again...
cheers
2air'
and while i agree the 17ft is a weekender, it actually has a higher carry capacity....
the 22 sleeps 4, so split that lunch into quarters...

Yeah but Terry, after you eat the 300 pounds of popcorn and twinkies every weekend won't the occupants themselves be too HEAVY for the axles?

2air, You're right on the money there. We won't be burned twice. Just thought maybe Airstream would have done it another way referring to the Safari Sport.
Airstream won't pony up for a heavier axle on our Quick Silver. For the money it cost, its a shame. Its sitting idle in a climate controlled building living the posh life. Oh well, in a couple of decades we will EBay it.

what can happen IF taken on the road....
i met i fellow in june, who IS traveling solo in a q/s...
as a videographer he was carrying a load of gear, mostly in the truck bed and the trailer was full as might be expected.
when i asked him about the trailer ratings and his load issue...
he basically replied "HUH?"
as he'd never seen the gvwr/ncc placard...
then he commented...
"well that explains why i've had 3 tires fail this summer!"
cheers
2air'

2air,
I talked to our loca dealer the a.m., and they said there was a box to check for us "americans" to spec a CSA equipped trailer. I am also awaiting Airstream to contact me to answer directly about the CSA issue.
Our dealer also was VERY aware (with a big sigh) of the extreme CCC limitation ( Cargo Carrrying Cap.) of the Safari Sport

I know I view things from an odd angle.
The 22 SS is an almost perfect trailer to me. I would have bought this over my 25 FB had it been availible.
For the money I'd save over a traditional A/S ($20,000 ish?)
I'd buy the axle it should have and be happy for years.
It's true it should be out the door with the right axle but corp. penny pinching often causes stupid situations like this.

Ah, but it's a good hurt, right? He'd be staying with the mother product which is a good thing.
I know, you are thinking you've been hurt before, but not by GC and in such a personal way - right in the Airstream.
We sure do get attached to our bullets.

Would I give up the 25 FB for a Sport? No. I am truly spoiled at this point. But I would have bought one instead. I love the size length and width. The bathroom is tops. The weight means I'd have kept my wonderfull F150 and since the whole set up would have been shorter, lighter and norrower I'd be in boondock heaven. I'd also have saved enough money between the truck and trailer to have a new Corvette. A really nice one not a stripper.

i'm picking up a new 08 23' safari in Dec. Are you all telling me that there will be a problem with the amount of weight I can carry such as cloths, cooking items, etc. I will be spending a month in fla and I will need to take basic items for myself and wife. Does anyone know how much weight I can pack? Rob

well sure.
ALL a/s have an issue with ncc (net carry capacity)
some models the issue is 2500 lbs of gear...
and on others it is a few 100 lbs of gear.
water, lp gas, options all cut into ncc.
for this unit it may be just 9 lbs, which ain't much.
the 'estimated' specs are at the a/s website for your unit.
which will have a placard inside the unit with these details...
until you actually WEIGHT the trailer and estimate how much stuff you NEED to carry...
there really isn't a problem
2air'
i like traveling with water AND lp gas, but many folks with the itty bitty units skip the water.
