1969 Safari shock absorber studs

HELP I have the horizontal shocks and on the starboard side the studs are damaged ( we won't talk about how that happened ) I need to replace or repair them. Do they screw out of the arm and frame or do I need to drill them out and replace them with bolts? any ideas? Also I have noted that there is a wide variation in prices from suppliers. I can get the brakes ( complete brakeplate/magnet/shoes) both at $90 at one place and 75 each at inland rv Any thoughts? Where is the best plce to get the shocks? All Advice appreciated tom

Help! by Motormite sells replacement shock studs. Drill out the spot the old stud sat in, and use the replacment stud. It's threaded on the part that bolts to the axle or frame, so no welding is needed. They cost less than $10 each (more like $6.99). They are available at mosty DIY auto parts stores.

I am waiting for all the no shock crowd to weigh in and tell you what a waste of time it is to bother with shocks at all .

Your biggest arguement for, is the "Airstream factory".

Surely, they are cost concious, and would not use them unless they felt they were necessary.

Remember, a shock is not a leveling device, but a "motion restrictor".

If you do not use the "motion resrictors", then what will keep that motion under control?

But it's your investment.

Strange thing though, I wonder how many of us would ride an a car or light truck, that had no shocks??

That answer is easy, NO ONE.

Why? Who wants to be bounced around while moving. No one again!!

Same answer for the Airstream/Argosy trailers. Remove the shocks, and you will pay the penalty of long term expensive repairs.

But, if the trailer shakes to pieces, which it will, you can always sell it on e-bay.

Hey Andy,

Well that is exactly correct,as you have stated.I have tried to convey the reasons for shock usage in prior posts ,specifically explaining the need for shocks along with what a shock absorbers job is to perform .Its not my opinion ,it is factual information .The forums exist specifically for knowledge sharing ,Im sharing it here .The debate over putting shocks back on or not seems strange to me as I would think everyone wants the best performance from their trailers.If we look at the balance of the tire and wheel as you have mentioned many times ,shaking the trailer apart,loose rivits ,cabinets,etc, we know that even and especially with the torsion axle the bouncing from the imbalance cannot be controlled by the torsion axle alone or even the shock ,so why assume that not having a shock is fine .Wouldn't it be worse with the imbalance without the shock absorber? The known facts say absolutely it would be .I want the best performance running gear on any of my vehicals and my tradewind .Just makes good sense I think.
I hope it will be a fizzle axel and no fireworks ,but I know the argument lurks
out there and many posts say don't bother ,so I would expect them to come up here also , thats all .

There are those that want the very best, such as original, or better.

There are those that will take second best, most anytime, just to save a buck, but justify their choice usually with opinions, not facts.

And then there are those that just don't care to listen to facts.

That's one of our freedoms benefit, one persons trash, is another persons treasure.

Each of us has an opinion, that usually differs from the dictionary, as to the true definition of good, better and best, especially when the subject is Airstream, and how to "properly" repair them.

Many of the repairs performed by some owners, would put a dealer out of business in a heart beat, if they turned out that same quality of work.

So, the bottom line is, if someone has created a monster, they can always sell it for way too much money on E-bay. This is a well documented fact.

Unfortunately, many of our customers have been a victum of that process.
