1962 Flying Cloud Torsion Axle Help

We have a 62 Flying Cloud. Having trouble getting assistance in replacing the original torsion axle. No travel left in the system. Tampa Airstream service Dept coming up empty in being able to replace the axle-brake assembly. Inland RV unreachable and not answering emails. Anyone have the specs on which Dexter Axle replacement is the correct unit? How many degrees offset needed, 12.5, 22 degrees? Anyone know of a business with this knowledge base in the Tampa area? I put a call into the airstream RV chassis folks in Ft Myers and waiting to hear back. Any advice would be appreciated.

Some of those axles were welded in.
You might inspect to see what kind of work you have in store.

As far as ordering a replacement, likely you are going to need to get detailed measurements to have one built.

There a number of Dexter Distributors in Florida to help you with that as well.

That old are a custom order, built to your specs. Two ways. Contact Dexter and request a spec sheet. Fill in the blanks, pay the money, right or wrong its yours. Not difficult if you have experiance. OR the easy way. A guy in our area that knows them inside and out. Colin Hyde Trailer Restorations, Plattsburg NY, 518-566-4400. He only needs year, model and your option preferances. weight capacity, brake size, torsion arm down angle in degrees, high or standard mounting bracket and shock brackets. Pay him he submits order pay shiping to your choice. I've bought from him 3 times best price and perfect fit. Heed Actions warning, after 1962 torsion axles were bolted on. But in 1962 some early models were welded, meaning you have to cut them off without damaging the side plate then drill 5/8 holes to attach new. The shock mounts, some say shocks are not needed. My responce, there a no charge option and take a ride in one towed without shocks! 10 inch vs 12 inch brakes? Yea, you do'nt need 12 inch. Untill you do! 22.5 to 45 degree down angle on torsion arms? likley 22.5 original. I opted for 45 degree for more ground clearance on my old 22 ft. Same for the "High mounting brackett". 1 inch more clearance on the bracket. Gave me 3 or 4 inches extra clearance, usefull for boondocking. Saw no issue in towing. Last envoice 16 months ago, complete axle delivered to home $700.

Thanks putback! I did order from Colin. Fit perfectly. Installation at Tampa Spring in Bradenton, FL. They had a fantastic installer who really enjoyed the challenge of the 62 FC axle.

She's in solid road worthy form these days. Now I just need to re-rivot all the rivets that popped inside as she rolled to the repair shop. LOL. At least she didn't break in two. I saw pics of that happening once.

Thinks for the response

Happy Trails

If the rivets wore the holes and are loose / hanging you should consider redrilling for next dia. size rivet. Replacing with 1/8" in expanded holes tends to result in constantly chasing loose ones. Last I new jay-cee sales & rivet had them with a head so close to the original 1/8th you had to look close to tell them apart.

Putback, you’re exactly right. Anytime I drill out an 1/8” rivet, since the hole is already stretched, I go back with a 5/32” rivet. You really can’t notice a difference in the heads.

Ahhhhhh! Thank you Bubba and Putback. Some of the 1/8 worked fine with replacements. Will definitely hit up Jay-Cee for some 5/32s.
