Ridiculous furnace issue

I'd always thought that way too much heat came out near the galley floor and not enough from the bed/bath heater vents. So I managed to get my phone inside the compartment where the furnace is and took the attached picture.

To my surprise, it appears that when my furnace was installed, someone removed the center knock-out and never replaced it so nearly ALL of the heat is escaping before it ever gets to the ducts. I have no idea what the duct tape was for. Crazy poor quality.

I talked to a very helpful tech at Airstream today who confirmed that is clearly an error on their part. Fortunately Dometic sells cover plates and I'll be able to fix this before our winter trip.

Anyone have any tips for removing the interior wood structure around the furnace so that I can access the hole?

There is also a chance that the knock-out fell inside the furnace so I'll have to see if I can get look inside. Maybe the duct tape was holding it on?

I believe the entire furnace slides out of the sheet metal plenum and you can patch it by reaching into the plenum from outside once the furnace is out of the way.
I could be wrong on that, I saw a newer furnace on You Tube that had the duct holes as part of the unit and looked a lot like yours, on that one you have to be able to twist and unlatch the ducts to slide out.

Used my endoscope/inspection camera to look inside the furnace opening and, sure enough, the knock-out was inside the furnace. Took some effort but I was able to fish it out. Access to the front of the furnace was pretty simple - just had to remove the four screws holding the small panel just in front of the unit near the floor.

The furnace runs MUCH quieter now without that piece of metal rattling around inside of it.

I contacted Dometic and they are sending me a no-cost duct cover plate.
