RecPro Houghton Install

RecPro installation manual calls for sealant between the roof and outside gasket. The Dometic did not require sealant. An install video on YouTube specifically for the Houghton says that they choose not to use the sealant and have never had a leak. I am about to put mine on and am debating whether to seal or not. Does anyone have guidance on this issue?

Hey Kevin, long time! When in doubt, always use sealant! Aluminum is not a very stable metal, it contracts and expands. I installed a Houghton in the rear of one of my trailers and I did use sealant (most like Temppro or vulkem) .

I did land up using sealant. It was an easy install and I am delighted with the functionality of the unit.

I used inch wide butyl tape on the underside of the plastic flange, and set it in place and used some strong clamps to squeeze it down in place. after the butyl had squeezed somwhat, the next day or so, i masked around the flange and ran a thick bevel filet seal around the flange using GeoCell sealant. Let it skin over and pulled the tape. It was a week or so before I got the A/C installed (trailer is in a building) and it seems to have worked nicely.

Some of the Houghtons use the traditional foam seal, and I think that is what was on the A/C in the Youtube video and the installation instructions do no differentiate between the flange mount and the foam gasket mount.
