putting in air

i am having air put in my 78 air stream, before they cut the hole in camper, is there anything i need to know about first,

vent the drainage away from your aluminum. Look at an Airstream that has it done alreadya nd don't go tot he cheapest place.. find an AS dealer.

We had our air replaced and didn't have any BUT AS do it.

Your trailer has built in wiring for AC.

You need to find out it's exact location, as AC's are never mounted in a roof vent, in any of Airstreams products.

The location of the wiring depends on the year and model of trailer or motorhome.

If you list the serial number of the trailer, I will post the exact location of the AC wiring that's already in the ceiling.

-there are some HIGH qualiity airs out in the marketplace, don't settle for anything less than a mess of airs.. you need six airs to make a mess, less than six is a "covey" but reallly, who gives a flock..haha

- don't succumb to compressor depression. if you do use a ding king to remove the pinging sound while eating a king don. (why dont' they call them ding-dongs like when I was a kid?...I'm hungry...)

- you may only get one shot at this...don't blow it...up...or down...

Most roof AC units are designed to fit in a 14" sqauare roof vent. Check to see if the roof vent on your Argosy is reinforced to hold an AC. You also will need a 120V power source at the opening. Condensation drains on after-market units usually drain over the roof and down the side so you don't need an interior drain tube. Of course, you get a water line down the side of the trailer. Don't let "them" (whoever they are) cut a new hole in the roof. Use the vent opening. Darol

That's a bit confusing as almost all A/S have the A/C unit between the vents, not in one of them. If the pre-wire is not at the vent, why locate the AC there?
If the unit is installed and sealed correctly there is no problem with cutting a hole in the roof...unless the person doing it is a butcher.

We're mild do-it-yourselfers and installed the AC unit in a couple hours.

1. Called Andy and gave him the serial number, he gave me a measurement and a location to measure from. I cut a 1 inch hole in the ceiling at that measurement and found the wire less than a nuckle away (the wire installer was a 1/2" off).

2. I then cut the hole about 4" in diameter (about the size of an electrical box) so I could look in with a flash light, then marked, drilled the corners and cut the inside skin out, then did the roof. Installed some 2" C channel aluminum stock to reinforce the roof area, hooked up the unit, bolted it down and presto. I'm cheap I know, but wouldn't dream of paying someone to do a job that easy unless for health reasons or something I couldn't take on that project (plus I'm the one to deal with if I'm not happy with the quality of the job). Just had a buddy come by for the 2 minute job of setting the unit on the roof and even that wasn't bad. Link to our install:

Only tools I used were basic stuff, good tin snips, drill, wire strippers etc and a sawzall for cutting the c channel to reinforce (could have used a hack-saw).

thank you for the reply, i am a disable vet, so i have to have someone put it in, some thing i can do, but that is not one of them, i have a dealer going to put it in, but they are not airstream, but have say they have do this before, i just want to be on top of this and know what they are doing---rob

Beware of generic rv service techs who say they know what they are doing who are not specialists in Airstreams. I found out from experience they usually don't.
