new air conditioner gasket

I have read two opinions on the proper way to install a new gasket for my coleman air conditioner. No sealant should be used from when person who posted. You torque your units bolts to a specific pound (40 - 50). The other opinion was go ahead and use sealant with the new gasket.

I have a used air conditioner (1997 Coleman that works) and a new gasket. Sealant with gasket or no sealant when installing the gasket. What is the correct way for installation. I was only able to find one thread.

Put a new air unit in this summer. No sealant.
I think unless you can drop the unit straight down on the roof without moving the seal you would be compromising the integrity of the sealant anyway.
After manhandling the unit up onto the roof we had to reposition the A/C and gasket a couple of times to get everything lined up square with the opening.
The 70ís roofs are flatter in the center than the earlier rigs. Maybe the earlier rigs needed some around the edges. I had a Coleman on a í67 and you could plainly see the edges of the gasket. Not so on the í72.
That 50 Ft/Lbs was the torque spec on my bolts as well.
We didnít have leaks from condensation or from a torrential downpour all season.

Good luck,
