Mediocre A/C

It works, but not what I would call "great". Yesterday, it was 95 degrees here, the trailer is in a shaded spot, and the a/c running full-blast would get the temp down to 78 running full-blast. I know that newer units are more efficient, etc, but in comparison, the little window a/c in my 400 sq ft. bedroom has to be kept on a very low setting, once things get cooled down. The trailer's a/c appears much larger, and there's only about 160 sq feet in the thing.

This is a Coleman unit...not original, but I don't know the exact age. I noticed that the condensate just runs down the outside of the trailer, which based on other threads that I've read, is probably by design. (no stains, though...maybe because we're in a northern climate, and don't need a/c all that much). I have no documentation on the unit....where do I start? I can take the interior shroud off, and clean the filters....anything else?

Have someone check the freon level. Most anyone familiar with
airconditioners can do that. Andy

about mine, is when it runs, the compressor seems to run for about 3 minutes then shuts off. Now, I did take the shroud off, and remove the green filters, then washed them out and let them dry. I ran the unit with the shroud off and the compressor did not cycle, it ran, more or less continuous. If you look, there is a small temperature probe, on the right side, under one of the filter pads. I am wondering if this is "trapping" some of the cold air and signaling the compressor to shut off. I am going to see if I can slit the filter pad, so the sensor tube is between the shroud and filter pad, or just eliminate the filter pad on that side, which I hate to do. I talked to my brother in law, who is an HVAC serviceman, and he said this could very well be the cause of the cycling. I give it a try and report back.

I had a problem with the AC on myold Scamp where the compressor kept cutting in and out. In that case, I found that cold air was leaking back right on the temperature probe in the inlet of the AC. What the probe saw was mostly ice cold output air right out of the evaporator instead of input room air.

I blocked the leakage path and the AC ran great after that.

Now that you guys mention that, this is exactly how mine was acting. it would cycle on and off. I did take the filters out and clean them, but I haven't run it since putting them back in. (it cooled off..). I'll look again for a temperature probe...don't know if I'll find it or not. I looked everything over for anything "obvious" that might need to have the dust blown out of it or anything, and concluded that there wasn't anything to see from the inside.
