How to seal gap between exhaust plate and outer skin.

Pulled old Suburban (NT34SP) furnace. There is a chrome plate on the outside of our AS that the intake and exhaust pass through. When I got the plate off there was some kind of dried "putty" that had been used to seal a small (2mm maybe 3mm) gap between the chrome plate and the outside skin.

Since butyl and plumber putty are an oil based material, I doubt that either were used. Anybody know what kind of material is used to fill the gap?

When removing and remounting (a couple of times) a similar plate for our Atwood furnace, I have used pipe joint compound to reseal the join with the trailer's outside skin. I first tried it because that looked to be what the factory used (we bought the trailer new). The pipe joint compound is heat resistant, has held up well without being affected by the exhaust heat, does not leak, and allows the plate to removed quite easily.

Only thing I found was Plumbers Putty. Seems to be OK. If it bursts into flame I will re post.

I used plumber's putty to seal the exhaust plate on the outside. Looks like it will hold up for a few years.
