Second (and hopefully last) follow up
Thanks so much to all who helped.
The thermostat functioned normally for six to eight hours. We left with the thermostat on heat pump setting then returned to another E1 error code. Tried whatt we had tried earlier unsuccessfully. Used the space heater and actually did well.
Next morning, Monday, we called Dometic. The tech suggested that getting a new thermostat. We called Jackson Center and the tech thought that was possible but was concerned that the dip valves could be faulty. As per Al, the signal for the furnace goes through the heat pump. If the heat pump dip valve is faulty the furnace will not be recognized.
We purchased a new thermostat. Everything is working fine for two days. But we've left the thermostat on furnace. Scared to change that setting. Turned off power and again checked the batteries with readings >12 each. Thanks all.
