Converting the old heater to a thermostat?

Has anyone attemted to add an electronic ignition and a thermostat to the old, manual light heater?

I know of no one that has done this to an older heater. Usually just a real good cleaning is all that is done to them. I read were some one retro fit a bar-b-que ignitor to one, but I would not do any modifications to anything gas operated.

Temperatures are regulated by opening the window a little more.
