Caution regarding connection to Dometic Thermostat

First off I will say if you are not having a problem then probably don't mess with it.

That said i will leave it up to you whether or not to inspect this as an off season preventative maintenance task.

My thermostat went out mid trip and as I removed it from the wall, to check it, the connector pulled the receptacle completely off of the circuit card.

I was able to carefully resolder the 4 connections, but the very small tabs that held the receptacle to the board would only align it, not hold it in place so I added epoxy at 3 locations to hold it in place.

The problem was the cable was under tension and had zero slack in it so it had pulled on the connector. I was able to gain a small amount of slack to reconnect it, and everything worked after re-installing it.

Now back home I plan to open up the access hole, add an extension to the cable and then restrain it near the thermostat, with some slack in the cable so it will not be stressed in the future.

I will add some photos in a follow up post which will help explain this.

It might be worth considering a Micro Air Easytouch as a replacement. I found it to be an improvement over the Dometic.

+1 for the Easytouch. Much easier to use.

+3 on the Micro Air thermostat as you can turn it on and off remotely via WIFI / internet.

Especially useful if you have pets as it also has alerts that you can set to warn you of extreme van/trailer temps real time.

I also endorse the Easy Start - especially now with the bezel that covers the old holes - Additionally, I had a similar taunt cable and lightly jiggling and lightly tugging had it release a kink somewhere and suddenly, I had plenty of slack. The theory is that it was hung up or dragging on the rough fiberglass shower.

Caution that the wire doesn't slip back into the hole in the wall. We taped ours to the wall temporarily while waiting for the new one. We plugged in the new one to test before mounting - the furnace fired right up - then we installed it to the wall as before.
