Alternate heating option......

Hello,
I know there are other (or at least one) post about radiant floor heating. My thoughts were to install a gas instant tankless water heater and running the pex on the underside of the subflooring.

I just purchased a 69 Ambassador that has been gutted and the belly pan/insulation is removed. My plan was to add the pex in a closed system w/a small pump for circulation and add ridged foam insulation before I add the new belly alluminum. Conceptually this should work but has anyone tried this with any results?

I suppose it depends on what you value most. Want cozy toes even in bare feet? go for it, If you implement it well with a fair amount of insulation and don't mind the cost, it will work fine. On the other hand if you want to maximize energy efficiency and value on the dollar don't even think about it.

We do live in the south, but have family in Maine so I'm trying to figure out what would be the best option for heating. My AS is an empty shell right now so I have no original heating parts etc. I looked into the Catalytic heaters but with small kids it makes me a little Leary.

The "best" option for heating is probably the propane furnace.

Lots of old threads on heating/cooling options and lots of opinions, you might read a few. I don't think their is such thing as a "best option" since they all involve compromise and depend mostly on the use mode. Mostly above 42 and hooked to shore power? A/C - Heat pumps are fantastic. Far and away the most efficient and dual purpose. When its colder than 40, consider small portable electric heaters. They conserve the expensive propane, just pack them away when you don't need them, though consideration to keeping the belly tanks a bit warm may need to be addressed. Disconnected? then it has to be propane and/or a generator. Your hot water floor idea will work if your heart is set on it. Run the pipe/tubing by the belly tanks too. If you do this, I'd go with closed cell spray on foam for under the floor since these aluminum cans tend to leak and the floors tend to get spilled on. Perhaps there are threads about insulation also, you may want to search for that too. Or go with the tried and true duct-ed propane furnace, and send a little warmth down to the belly tanks.

I think after many threads and lots of research I will end up going with the marine wood stove. Since I'm building all the cabinetry myself I will make access for heat to reach the inside pipes. As for the belly tanks we will only have fresh and grey water. The toilet will be a composting style. I plan to use some electric heat tape on the tanks to help on any very cold days/nights.
