air conditioner for 1969 Caravel

I would love to have some thoughts about installing air in a trailer that does not have a/c . I just have a fan in the ceiling and really do not want to give that up. Is it true that you cannot install the a/c where the fan is anyway ? Has anyone used a portable a/c in a small trailer like mine ? Thanks.

We added A/C to our 69 tradewind. I emailed Andy at Inland RV who had the location inside the ceiling for the wire there down to the inch in one of his books measured from Bow #1 (the first support after the end cap ends). Was a very easy install.... See the thread:

Our Caravel has only one roof opening which is where the fan is. I thought that Andy had stated that you cannot use this opening for an a/c unit. Do you have more than one roof opening ?

The opening for the AC is not made if the trailer does not come with an AC. A hole needs to be made if you want to install an AC.

What Richard said, if you look at the link I posted there you'll see me marking for the location. Airstream designed the trailer to support (balance wise) A/C in a particular location and prewired inside the ceiling in 69 for that so it could be cut open at a later date (such as a dealer add on). It does not go in a vent location. Cutting was a piece of cake, just had to add a few braces to span the opening.

Not a problem

Here is the one I mounted. It was no problem and the unit is great. Portable units are a pain to use and I don't feel like they do a good job...(here in Texas.) Low profiles are still available and I recommend one instead of the big units...they look all wrong on a small Caravel
