Add second A/C - Ducted

Can I add a second A/C unit to my 2019 FC39 RB? I have the ducted air system. I don’t mind a second plug to power the unit avoiding the upgrade to 50 amps.

Guessing this would be quite complicated. Trade up to newer AS?

Curious to hear more informed feedback.

Yes it can be done.
Though, I've not done it

The better question might be, who does it? I would ask the factory if that is an upgrade they perform.

Second ducted AC

We asked about this during a factory visit a couple of years ago. We have a 2017 FC27FBT with a single ducted AC system.

We were told that the cheapest option was to install a second AC in place of the Bedroom Fantastic Fan. That would be wired to a separate 30 AMP system. The second AC would not be ducted. My recollection was that this would cost between $8K and $9K.

The option of a ducted second AC with 50 AMP wiring would require a major removal of interior panels and cabinetry, plus rewiring the trailer to 50 AMP throughout. I do not recall the price, but think it was more than double option A.

We decided that if a second AC is necessary, we will trade up to a new trailer.

So far, the AC has been fine for all but a few days of Georgia/FL sun but even then, it cools down when the sun sets.

In most floor plans having only one air conditioner, it is usually possible to close off the bedroom, in order to increase cooling in the other "room." Our old 25' worked fine this way, even in 90F summer heat. We had to stuff pillows above the top accordion door track . . . no prob.

...unless it is the bedroom you want to cool..... I have found that sitting outside is usually fine, natural breezes and all of that, but I need it cool for sleeping. I still subscribe to the group that says don't go where it is so hot you need two A/C units. We have had a few miserable nights, but not so many that I would welcome 50 amp service, the bigger cord, and loss of a fan. We use the roof fans more than the A/C. For us, it is the mountains in the summertime or we stay home.

Do you have your facts straight? You say you have a 2019 Flying Cloud 30RB... Well, that model already comes with dual a/c’s and 50amp service...

You can order an AS (even a 30) with only one AC..perhaps that was what happend with this 2019 model? Anyway, to answer his question, yes you can; but I am not sure I would try it without taking it to AS for the help in Ohio. I would likely try to sell/trade and get the one you want with 2 AC's. Doing a modification without adding the 50A service dosn't sound straight forward either; now you have 2 sets of cords to deal with; am I wrong here?

FYI- we had only one AC on 3 of our 25' AS's over the years. Never missed the second unit; one worked fine. Our currant 28' came with 2 AC's; after using it now for few years, I would opt for 2 AC's in the larger units for sure! We use 2 on, to quickly cool down, then turn to one. We alternate to the AC in Zone 1 for watching TV and Zone 2 for sleeping.

Assuming Pontzdav has used his single air conditioner, in order to write the original post, do you think he might have missed seeing a second A/C unit inside the trailer?

Guessing "2019" was a typo . . . please see next post.

Thanks,

Yes. It’s a 2015 not 2019. Sorry for the typo. Thanks for all the info. Seems best advice is to trade up if I really want 2 AC units. My son moved to the New Mexico high desert and I want to visit in the Summer. It’s triple digits during the day but cools considerably each night. I’ll deploy all the awnings and give it a go with one AC. They all say it’s a “dry heat”. Not sure what that means, exactly. I’ll report back next month to share the experience.

Thanks for the update . . . good luck . . . and have fun!

Glad you can get on the road again, and visit your son. In the NM high desert, you might just be fine.

Of course, you know that photos from your new campsite are now required?

Adding 2nd AC

Jackson added a 2nd AC about 2 years ago to our 25 FC RB. Cost $10,000. Was cheaper than buying a new trailer. Installed in back fantastic fan opening and converted it to 50 amps. We did lose the front connection so only have the side connection. Works fine.

This second AC installation cost about $2,000, using the second electric cord method (not upgrading the existing 30 to 50 amp)>
https://www.airforums.com/forums/f42...ml#post1552334

ps:
In order to install into the ductless system the return air would need to be extended through the duct. And, possibly additional outlets might be need to be added to access the AC attachment points. These cost would be in addition to the above $2k. And, also any material/labor cost increases since this post would be additional.
My guestimate is a cost of less than $3k.

Dry heat means....doesn't feel that hot outside...but when you get inside a cooled space, you will start to sweat pretty quick if triple digits. Your in for an experience with one AC!

Well. Pulled into KOA in Tucumcari NM today at 3:30 PM. 100 degrees and one A/C on the FC30. Turned on the air, unhitched, took a ride around town, gased up, maybe 30 min. Back at the trailer and it’s 87 inside and falling slowly. Not to bad with a fan and the humidity was only 10%. Down to About 80 degrees in about 90 more minutes. Quite livable at least here in the “dry heat”.

Jackson center cost of upgrading to 50 amp and 2nd AC

This week I contacted Jackson Center for an estimate and schedule for upgrading our 2016 27FB to 50 amps and adding a second AC (in the bedroom). The estimate was $9800 for a ducted unit like ours, or $6000 for an unducted one. The $9800 option would take 6-7 work days or 3+work days for the $6000 one. Apparently if you have a ducted unit and want to try to save $3800 by going non-ducted, it won’t work. The extra complications of ducted units mean you wouldn’t save much by adding a non-ducted AC to a ducted coach. The earliest they could schedule the job was Nov 2nd. We chose not to pursue it, even though it would cost more to trade up.

I'm curious. Did they tell you the cost of the electrical upgrade, separate from the cost of adding the air conditioner.
