Not sure what model AC you have but my 2005 is R134a. You do not necessarily need a full set of gauges but the "low side" gauge is really helpful in getting charge right based on your ambient temperature.
These units do not have charge ports, so you will need to either sweat in a Schraeder valve or use a saddle valve.

I’ve used a saddle valve on a chest freezer in the past so that is an option.
