2010 Flying Cloud - A/C Just Went Out

Now this is aggrevating...

My a/c just went out. All of the fuses are still fine and the breaker isn't thrown. I've been living in this thing full time for only a few weeks and the a/c is already malfunctioning.

One thing I did note was that there was a bunch of water dripping out of the filter area on the part of the unit that's inside the trailer. I don't know if that's a sign of something or not...

Can anyone offer me any advice? It's HOT!

Try re-setting your thermostat first by doing the following:

1. turn off the thermostat (Dometic Comfort Control Center or CCC) at the bottom switch.

2. press in the top and bottom buttons on the CCC and hold them in.

3. turn on the bottom switch. You should see 'FF' in the window and it should be back-lit.

4. count to 5 and release the top and bottom buttons.

5. the CCC should be working normally now.

You did not say if any other functions like the fan/ heat pump (if you have one, which you probably do) of furnace functions are operating. If your fan runs on the 'fan only' setting but the compressor will not engage on A/C, you most likely have a bad start capacitor/PTCR which needs to be replaced before the compressor will operate again.

If it's more than the above, you need to find a factory authorized Dometic Service Center (you don't have to be limited to an Airstream dealer) who can troubleshoot it for you, especially if your CCC is operating properly and your breaker is functioning. I would check the output from the breaker with a volt meter just to be certain that you don't have a bad breaker. I would try re-setting the breaker anyway by flipping it down to the off position and then up again (with the CCC off). Be advised that your warranty will cover parts and labor to FIX the problem, NOT to diagnose it, nor any mobile service charges that you might incur.

It took a while for the compressor to kick on though. Is it possible that my capacitor/PTCR may be on the fritz?

Typically, they either work or they don't. Sometimes it takes a bit of time for the compressor to kick in. It is usually a pressure situation within the system and has nothing to do with the capacitors. If your caps are shot, you will get the smell of something electrical burning, and you will hear the compressor groaning like it wants to start, but it won't.

The same things has happened today to our 2011 Flying Cloud 25'. I will call Dometic in the AM or find a dealer. My success in having any repair at an A/S dealer has been less than satisfying and I end up fixing the problem myself. So, hopefully I can find someone in the Daytona Beach area who knows something about Dometic and can fix the issue. Water leaking and I have removed the plastic cover. The unit was short cycling for about two seconds so I pulled the cover to see what the problem was. Can see anything other than water droplets in the top of the cover. No signs of leaks from the outside, all from the inside. This is frustrating when it's 93 during the day and 70s at night with high humidity. Guess I'll find out tomorrow what it is if a Dometic service center can fix the unit.

Sometimes, with really high humidity and fairly low temperatures, it is possible for interior moisture to condense on parts of the unit other than the evaporator. The problem isn't limited to Dometic and there's little that can be done about it other than try to keep the humidity levels down and run the fan continuously.

I believe that was the case. I removed the cover, dried everything, reset thermostat, and ran overnight with the cover off. No moisture. I believe your comment was right on as it Reid not repeat after the first day/night. I will take the temp down more slowly in the future. I did run the fan overnight the first night so not sure that helped or contributed. Thanks for the comment.

Somebody told me a couple of weeks ago that running the AC on low cool in high humidity area will cause this to happen, so we ran ours on high and medium cool a the beach a couple weeks ago and it ran fine

After replacing the cover I still had some moisture the next morning. Moisture dripping from the inside grill opening. Our 22' A/S had a 13,500 A/C but it was a Carrier and it never had moisture problems using it in exactly the same locations and same time of year. I'm not sure if the Dometic is the same quality as the Carrier but I can say the Carrier never had a moisture issue. We have another day so we'll see how it goes. I inquired about a 15k unit when we were ordering and was told that would be oversized for a 25' and would cycle on and off too frequently. Daytime temperatures here in Florida are in the 90s and the interior temperature continually rises with the A/C on.
