2001 11.5KBTU Immediate Cycling

Our 2001 11.5KBTU A/C does a great job of cooling. Everything about its operation is normal except the compressor will occasionally shut off (at a seemingly normal time) and within seconds it tries to restart. It won't of course, so it overloads the circuit such that the fan speed drops. It will try this for two or three cycles and then start up normally. It may then run normally for an hour or so, cycling off and after a while back on, before it does the short cycle again.

Any thoughts about what this could be?

Bump.

I'm thinking it is the thermostat. If it is a bimetallic coil, maybe as it gets close to releasing it makes an intermittent connection. Is the thermostat (a part of the unit itself) a replaceable part?
