1964 Overlander A/C Compressor question

I have the original A/C on my 64 Overlander. I finally got my power running. Turned on the A/C and the fan and compressor both ran putting out cold air. It did this for about 5-10 minutes then stopped. The compressor seems to kick off after only a short time, is there a particular reason for this?

If it is similiar to other refrigerant systems, the compressor will shut off after brief use due to low freon levels (low pressure) via a safety switch to keep you from damaging the compressor.

Another possibility might be the wall mounted air conditioner thermostat. Try setting it to the lowest possible temperature (if it is like my Overlander, it is the thermostat to the right of the furnace thermostat on the bedroom wall). Similar wall-mount thermostats are readily available at home centers if yours is questionable.
