Powder coat or Ceramic Coat for Old Stove?

I just purchased a 1961 Overlander and the stove is brown, original and a bit worn out on the edges. (See photo) I'm brand new to Airstream life...so...

Do you recommend powder-coating the stove or a tougher ceramic coat?

Ceramic is more expensive than powder-coating, but I heard powder-coating can handle up to 300 degrees?

I don't know the average temperature of a gas stovetop?

Any insights and experience appreciated!

IMO stove top should never get hot maybe little warm end of grids, rest of top nothing in contact w/flames. I don't no if ceramic coating smooth or rough finish only use I have is exhaust pipes. I have used a lot of powder coating on many things, will take lower temps, wears well plus can be touched up with matching color PAINT, also very smooth finish

On our 55 Princess, the top was removable so we had it chromed. The rest we cleaned up and left. Check around on the forums, should be more info. Also, there are places that renovate old stoves and I think one in Ca. Maybe they will answer your questions without charging. Good luck

Send it in and have it done in porcelain in whatever color you want. Just did a 63 double basin sink that was missing about 1/3 of the porcelain.

Here’s after

I can’t speak highly enough about the folks that did it.

I had the turbo housing and down pipe on my track car ceramic coated. That is probably seeing at least 1200 F up to 1700 F. Propane stove theoretically is hotter, just google temperature of propane stove.

I would trust advice of stove rebuilders, but I also note most open flame stoves you look at are either bare metal, chromed, or ceramic.

At any rate, the ceramic coating used on my car has been quite durable. This was a shop in Denver NC that caters to the Nascar teams, called Calico Coatings, if you want to chase them down.

We redid the porcelain on a 1954 stove that came out fantastic. It is way more expensive than powder coating. We had $775 in just the top and 4 burners. Then you add shipping both ways and, well, it adds up.

It is very nice though and well worth the money. If you can powder coat and it will hold up, I would go that route.

Joey,

I wouldn't recommend powder coat for that use - although we PC'd the front face panel of our VW Westfalia stove (as it was originally, & stove top is SS), but that's a different use that the full stove top & oven door, etc.

If you mean baked on porcelain enamel as in the original finish, then that's what I'd recommend doing. If you mean ceramic coating like done on classic car & hot rod exhausts - then no, that won't give you the right non-porous, smooth & shiny finish of your original stove.

Take it to Carolina's for a proper re-porcelain enamel it to last, as she's local SoCal. They can also redo other appliances' porcelain enamel too, such as fridge, range hood, etc. at the same time - if you want them to all color match as new.

She used to have a small satellite shop here in Old Towne Orange, but I don't know if it's still there, so call them.

And unless it's running properly at all burners & oven, she can also restore/refurbish/repair all of the workings - but make sure to tell them that it's for Propane & not natural gas, so they know which jets, etc. to use.

They've done a lot of the Old Towne Orange antique home appliances, as well as a lot of Vintage Trailer people's appliances.

Also, if you're not already registered for the upcoming Newport Dunes Vintage Trailer Rally, swing on by on Saturday 10-2 9/28 for the public open house to see trailers, meet restorers & vendors, get ideas, have fun & free hot dogs for all comers courtesy of our buddy "Der Weinerschnitzel Dennis".

We'll be across the drive aisle from Dennis with either our 1960 Avion T20 or 1970 Eriba Puck (probably the latter) & either with our blue VW Westfalia van - can't miss us.

PS - All of the other respondents above are from out of state, & probably don't have access to someone like Carolina, so take advantage of what we have locally here in SoCal.

Cheers!
Tom

That's great input Tom!

Thank you so much, I just spoke with Carolina and sent her pictures of my stove for a quote. Thanks also for the invite, but I'll be out of town. Sounds like a fun event!

With appreciation,
Joey
