Question Only Rounds pans for baking in Convection Microwave?

We just purchased the 2020 GT 23Twin and it came with the convection microwave, along with a round rack and round baking pan. My question concerns baking in the convection oven. Can I NOT use a small rectangle baking pan in the convection oven or do I always have to use a round pan? I like to bake and would like to use my small muffin pans or small rectangular pan. I’ve read the manual and it states to use the included rack and a pan without protruding edges, like the included round pan. The problem is that the turntable rotates, and there doesn’t seem to be a way to turn it off, so using anything other than a round pan will interfere with the rotation.

I’ve looked online and other convection microwave ovens have racks built in (just like a regular oven) so that pans slide onto the rack, but in the Airstreams, it is a rack that is placed on the turntable....which doesn’t seem to have an on/off switch.

Any suggestions? Do any of you bake with something other than the included round pan? If so, what do you use and does it cook/bake correctly?

Thanks,
Seanette Meserole

Sorry . . . no direct answer . . . what is the brand and model number of that oven and what is the diameter of your pan? Would a larger round pan fit in the oven, or is yours the max diameter possible?

Considering square pans only . . . what is the largest that would fit within the rotation pattern?

Does your paperwork include any recipe suggestions for baked goods you might want to try? You might have to shift course on this IMO.

Thanks,

Peter

You can use any pan that fits the rotation. I also have a convection/mw at home and use square pans all of the time, but typically only an 8 inch square pan fits on the rotation rack.

We use a 8” x 8” glass pan in our 2013 FC 30 RBQ convection oven.

I have your solution, Seanette.

We will drive up to Sugarland which is only a little over 3 hrs. away. While we're there, we can sample multiple batches of cakes (my favorites) and brownies (wife's favorite) that you've cooked in pans of varying sizes and shapes.

I promise an honest opinion on which batches came out the best. It's the least we can do to help in these trying times.

Made lemon squares in mine with 8 inch square pans. Not thrilled with it for baking.

A Dutch oven with a trivet on the bottom works better once you master the temperature thing with charcoal. And yes, round pans obviously work best in a DO, but parchment paper is great for bread, etc. Another trick is good with the trivet. Its purpose is to keep the bottom crust from burning - so if you turn the trivet upside down in the DO, there are only 3 small foot prints which can get overdone (sister PrudencePB's idea).
IMHO the convection part is OK, but uses way too many amps on a 30 amp service and overheats the whole trailer in summer. Easy to pop the main breaker if much else is running. In summer a DO or big electric toaster oven run outside and using the 20 amp plug on a pedestal makes more sense.

OT

A reminder that there is a Dutch Oven thread in the Stella's Kitchen forum:

Also, there are lots of dutch oven posts in the Cast Iron and Fire Cooking thread:

Is your mouth watering yet?

I purchased toaster oven sized backing sheet and pan as well as smaller 8 x 8 and 6 muffin tins. If it will work in a toaster over it will work in convection oven.
I have taken out the round and metal rack and also used a small glass rectangular baking pan. Also I have old square pyrex that work great. Love the convection micro! Good luck

I've used some different pans in the microwave/convection oven in the trailer, but they do have to be pretty small so they can rotate. I have a set of toaster oven pans that work well -a tiny Oneida set that is no longer available on Amazon. Certainly isn't for big meals or regular bakers!

Convection Oven!

My wife says:

Convection use turns OFF the rotating device in ours. Take out the turntable and put in the wire "grate" that stands above the turntable's "hub".

Then bake as normal in oven and make certain you are baking and NOT micro-waving.

Very successful.

We use any pan that will fit, metal or oven proof glass.
Cakes, cookies, biscuits, cornbread, casserole, roast … whatever. Just like at home!

Thanks, Peter. It is a Countoure RV-200S-Con. It looks like, from reading the responses, I can only use round or 8”inch square.

Larry,
Thanks. I like the way it cooks, but now I’m regretting not getting the propane oven. I guess I just have to get used to using only 8” round or square.

I LOVE it! You’re funny and made me laugh! I guess I just have to get used to baking and cooking in an 8’ square or round pan. I’m really regretting not getting the propane oven...but then I wouldn’t have a microwave, which we like having, too. Oh well... I’ll just have to adapt...

Foiled Again,
Thanks for the info. Not a fan of Dutch Oven cooking...did lots of it when tent camping with Boy Scouts and my kids. We love having an oven inside. But, I will adapt to 8” square and round pans. However, If I really need to cook something a bit larger, I like your idea of a toaster over...in a pinch. Thanks, Seanette

As this response suggests, it should be possible to just remove the turntable and place the cooking rack on the floor of the microwave. Then any pan that will fit on the cooking rack should work.

V Durban,
Thanks. I DO have toaster size pans! But because of the rotation, they don’t fit. The rectangular one and muffin tin don’t fit. I was hoping there was some way to turn off the turntable, but apparently there is not. So, I will need to adapt to 8” square and round pans.
Thanks, Seanette

Atwebs, Thanks! I DO have a really nice toaster oven set, but the rectangular ones don’t fit the rotation. If there were some way to stop the rotation, then all would be fine, but apparently there isn’t. I will just adapt to 8” square and round pans. Seanette
