Magic Chef Replacement
Hi all,
Let me preface this post with the fact that we are a fulltiming family of 4. Our 1971 Magic Chef Oven is on the fritz. We checked into rebuilding the broken safety valve but it would take 3 weeks and we fear that the extra use will kill it anyway.
Since our oven is separate from the stove top we are looking into the option of replacing it with a convection/microwave oven. We are wondering if there is anyone out there with a 1970's airstream (back of the oven compartment extends over the bed) with one had how the mounted/attached it in their airstream. Pictures would be greatly appreciated....
Well, after taking out the bottom of the existing Magic Chef, I discovered a small pool of mercury -- needless to say it'll be outta the trailer come morning light -- the thermostat does work in ours, so I will put it up for sale, as I seem to remember the 70's thermostats are somewhat sought after -- so PM if you're interested in it or any of the external small pieces (like knobs, etc).
There was mercury in the bottom of it? Any idea from what?
Yes, much to my surprise, the thermocoupler in my specific model uses a mercury bulb to open the gas valve, rather than an electric charge -- I'm curious if the thermostat does as well. Had I of known that before, I likely wouldn't have kept it -- I'm all about keeping it's vintageness, but the idea of having mercury in an oven just isn't my cup of tea!
