Magic Chef needs magic fix
Now I know why the oven in my 65 Caravel looked brand new, it probably hasn’t worked for decades. Because it’s in such great shape I’d like to clean it up and reuse it as the main cooking source in my total restoration. The problem is I discovered a broken part in the oven and I’m having a hard (read impossible) time finding a replacement. The pictures should explain the problem. I should be able to find a new line from the pilot fitting to the block with the pilot tubes but the deal breaker is that the fitting on the little cast block has been broken off (it was rusted solid when I tried to unscrew it).
Does anyone have this part?
Is there a replacement I could use for the pilot line?
Do I even need a pilot light? Can’t I just light the oven at the burner when I need it and turn the gas valve to the oven off when I’m not using it?
Dan

WOW, not a single reply to this thread in three hours. Not even a " gee, that sucks for you".
Come on, I know someone out there has the perfect solution, a link to a Magic Chef parts warehouse, a Magic Chef they've replaced with a modern cook-top that could be parted out, something. Help!

Seridan- I'm sure you can find somone that is scrapping a mid 60's range and can send parts. I'd put it out on the airforums classifieds in the wanted section to. Sometimes things sit on the forums for days without a reply and suddenly the right reader comes along with solution. FWIW I'd much rather light a pilot light than reach a match into a semi-enclosed space with a full unlit gas burner on... I'd hold out for the right piece.

You might be able to replace it with a similar part from a modern Magic Chef. The problem with not having a pilot light in there is that the main oven burner cycles on and off to maintain temperature, and needs the pilot for ignition.
Someone may correct me on this, but I would think that it isn't all that important to have the exact burner and pilot in the oven itself. Figure out what size fittings you have on there vs what's on the new stuff- it might be the same, and if not, you could cut it, and re-flare the pipe with the right size fittings for the new burner and pilot. A good hardware store can do all of that for you if you take the tubes for the burner and pilot out and bring them in to the store.

Some propane suppliers have parts and material to do repairs. The guy in our little town does.

I had the same problem a couple years ago. Luckily an RV shop in Napa had a pilot assembly in their stock of random parts that worked. I had the shop install it, so I would be no help in explaining how to do it.
My best guess is try to find a RV repair place that has been around a long time and might still have parts from the old days.

I'll check in the morning the parts that I pulled from our '66. I 'think' that our oven had the same problem as you have. I gutted the oven and installed a small microwave.

Thank you all for your suggestions, I plan to follow your leads today and check with RV shops, Appliance Repair Centers, and posting on the forum for used parts.
Thanks again for your help.

try this thread http://www.airforums.com/forums/f426...rts-58367.html
I'm looking for the oven valve, the one with the knob, myself.
