1971 safari oven

Hi I am new here, we just bought a 1971 23 foot safari. Everything seems to be original, it is in fair shape. Need help with the oven though. Its a magic chef, four burner stove plus oven, the four burners work great. The pilot on the oven comes on but when you turn the dial to set the oven temp we get nothing, the oven burner doesn't light. Anyone have any advice? PS I'm sure we will have more questions as time goes on!

Does the pilot stay lit when you adjust the temp dial on the oven?

If not then the gas valve in the themostat may be bad, or a PO may have shut off the gas to the oven all together. If the pilot ligts and stays lit, it tells you that you have gas to the oven safety valve, and that the ove thermocouple is working. The only thing left is the thermostat or a shut off valve somewhere. If it is the thermostat you may be in for a quest to find a replacement.

Sounds as if the valve itself may be bad. Good news, you can find a replacment at reasonable cost.
I replaced mine and then found out the thermostat was bad and would not control the oven temp. I found a thermostat that "might" work but it cost over $100 so I switched to microwave and small toaster oven.

Be carefull propane is very explosive and if you have no experience with it take it to someone for repair.

When not using the oven, be sure to set the oven control knob to "pilot off" if the pilot is not lit. If you don't do this, propane will be in the oven and you will smell it.
Also, on our '71 23 foot Safari, the oven doesn't light for several seconds after the temp is set for the oven. Be patient.

We tried it out, pilot was lit just fine, then we turned the oven dial and waited oh maybe 30 seconds plus and nothing happened.Also the pilot seemed to grow, there came a larger flame just beside the pilot. Not sure what to think of that?

Not sure of your type of oven pilot, however there was a time when gas ovens had a constant pilot light & when you turned the oven temp control on, it turned a secondary heater pilot , which in turn heated up the oven safety valve. Once the safety was heated, this in turn made the gas flow to the oven burner. When this system first came out we had a lot of calls as people would turn the oven on thinking the oven burner should come on. When it didn't they of course turned the burner off, thinking gas would be leaking into the oven. you may want to look at the (2nd) pilot light to see if a small tube is in the flame. If so, & the oven burner does not come on, then the safety is shot. I really hestitate giving suggestions regarding LP gas, as if not handled correctly, can cause serious harm. PLEASE, IF YOU DO NOT FEEL QUALIFIED OR COMFORTABLE,THEN TAKE IT TO A REPAIR SERVICE.
