Believe it or not, I still occasionally tent camp. All top of the line stuff. Big Marmot easy up tent w/vestibule, cots, nice little goodies for Jeep camping. The wife wants none of it, but my daughter likes to go out in the woods. All my combined tenting gear cost around 1% of our Globetrotter and does not require a storage lot, just some space in the closet. Our tent camping season is severely limited as I cannot stand not having AC from basically April - November here in Florida.

Hi

If we're talking about grandparents .... yikes ....

Mine started with tents back in the early 1920's. They had pictures of changing tires on a trailer in Florida from the 1930's ( trailer tires and Florida heat didn't go well together ...). They flipped between tents and trailers through the 1940's. By the end of the 1950's they were into "motel camping" and we inherited the trailer. It went away in the early 1960's when trailer brakes started being required..... (No, they didn't have brakes on many of them before that ....).

Camping is Camping?

To each their own.

Boondocking Bob at Cedar Breaks, Utah at 10,000+ feet, July 2021.

Boondocking Neanderthal next to Boondocking Bob. July 2021

Route 66 Casino, Albuquerque, New Mexico, May 2021. Open for.... ?

True Boondockers are a small number of Airstream Owners. It can be in a parking lot of a Casino, or in the National Forests at Cedar Breaks, Utah. But it is a... CHOICE... not a requirement.

Some say I am damaging our Airstream in the process. That is not true. I am avoiding those who do not know any better... and that works out very well.

Drag photos onto computer screen, then select one at a time

If you take a photo, drag it onto the screen of the computer. It will have a ID number. Mine say DSCN#. Those are off my camera and on my computer.

Dead End: I was expecting a whole pile of Trucks, Trailers and Cars at the End... but nope. Only Meteor City Route 66 off of I-40, New Mexico.

Try one photo laying around and SCAN it. Then you can easily transfer it onto a post. I would like to see these.

Yup. BMW riders are tent campers. BMW rallies were always at a campground.

Sometimes it’s easier to camp off of a motorcycle than it is to get a hotel room. That is, unless it’s pouring rain. I camped off and on all the way to Deadhorse AK and back. Although a hotel was required every now and then for a shower and laundry.

We have true Pioneers on the Forum! The transition to an Airstream was... ahhhhhh.

We had neighbors who said Camping was staying at a Holiday Inn. They had a Toyota Tundra...

How could you Tow a Holiday Inn?

Well, their ads used to show them towing the Space Shuttle...

But in answer to that, you can move anything on roller bearings pretty easily... The picture here is Timken's "Four Aces" (#1111) demonstration engine, the first to use roller bearings. And yes, it is actually being pulled by only four people in high heels.

Started tent camping in 1959, then in a popup 1985 and 1989 (a Coleman, the Airstream of popups, used it for 30 years before selling it for a good price) and then our current AS International in 2018.

Heck having a hot shower while boondocking in the fabulous middle of nowhere (as per civilization) never ceases to amaze me. No whining here!

Being happy and content is a relative concept.

I tent camped for 50 Years. (13-63). It was great. I introduced my wife to tent camping when we first met about 13 years ago, and she loved it too. We purchased an Airstream Classic and a Ford F350 in late 2018, and began our Airstream travels in the Spring of 2019.We love that too. Even though we Airstream only now, we do carry our trust 6 man tent, self inflating air mattresses, and 4 sub zero sleeping bags in a Thule mounted on the bed of our TV, and continue to use a lot of the compact camping gear, and we also carry the whole compliment of tent camping gear with out Airstream. Life is good!

Great Post!

Ray, what a refreshing departure from the usual! I’ve tent camped from Maine to California twice. Once on a Harley Davidson and once in a small roadster convertible. The first trip was long before even thinking about owning a TT, and the second was long after.

Sadly, tent camping is a lost art at most established campgrounds, with notable lack of noise, light and litter discipline, especially within the RV community. So I started staying mostly at NFS campgrounds with nothing but a vault latrine and a spigot. I found that the more primitive the site, the fewer of those who lack even tenderfoot Boy Scout knowledge about how to behave in and treat our great outdoors, or be considerate of others sharing it.

The luxury of a TT, especially one equipped to boondock with solar panels and gas appliances is amazing. The freedom of maneuver and economy of going light also has its rewards. With that, here is a photo from Dinosaur NM on the Colorado side looking west into Utah for all to enjoy.

I agree, I am a sea kayaker and spend several weeks a year on expeditions. I got my AS so I could include my dogs, since tent camping with dogs in the wilderness has it's own set of potential problems.

Hey Ray, my hubby & I bought a 1981 Airstream a few years ago, took it totally apart & are slowly rebuilding it. We have the running gear, floors, exterior & interior shell finished. Last month we built a bed platform, threw a mattress on top & towed or aluminum tent for the first time, from Florida up to Blue Ridge lake in the Smokey Mountains.

We had the best week camping ever!! We had a cooler & little gas grill to cook on. We kayaked on the lake & visited with our family who were all staying in a very expensive vacation house 10 miles away. We built campfires, watched the sun set, had a cocktail or two…it was heaven.

Back home now, we are still working on the AS, but I could travel with her just the way she is indefinitely. In fact, we are hauling her to Gulf Shores, AL in two weeks to visit the in-laws for a couple of days. Why stay in a house when you can book a state park site so near the beach?
