Rebuild Refer

It's time to deal with the refer. I need to replace the original - I think the model number reads RM35b (it's hard to read) It's a dometic from a 63 globe trotter - is there anyone out there that can rebuild it - take the box and put a new burner and workings on it? If I have to go to new do they make gas only?
Ya'll know where I'm going with this - as cheap as possible and not wanting to rework the woodwork..

I checked on my Dometic replacement chart, but the RM35-B was not listed. The closest was the RM 36. The dimensions are 28 3/4 X 20 1/2 X 20 5/8 and can be replaced with either a Dometic RM2352 or RM2353.

If these dimensions are not close to what you have, send me the size or your refer opening and I'll look it up from the dimensions.

Your best option and probably cheapest is to replace the refrigerator if it really needs to be replaced. What is wrong with it? Do you smell ammonia? Many units like yours are still running and in fact run better than some of the new ones. Could be all it needs is a good cleaning or maybe take it out turn it over a few times and burb it so the gas mixes again. Dometic has a very good web page. I had a rebuild RM50 in my TradeWind, it worked great.
I subsequently bought a rebuild unit from Alan Crane at www.gasrefrigeration.net , and it is fantastic at much less cost than a brand new one ( about 1/2)

We just had our Fridge rebuilt by Crane's also. Great deal. It was only $575.00. A new one would have been $1100 from Camping World. Luckily, our fridge was in perfect condition inside.

They have a diagnostic chart on their website http://www.gasrefrigeration.net/faultdiagnosis.htm. This would have been helpful if Lewster hadn't already told me Yellow Powder=Fridge Death.

Crane's was quick also. We brought it over Thursday Afternoon, and we picked it up today (Monday).

We too had ours rebuilt by Cool-Fun, it was a couple of years ago and it's still going strong. Here's an old thread with our whole process, story & costs, etc.

is to modify the front of your original refrigerator into a hinged false front and install a small modern unit behind it. That way, the vintage interior is preserved and you have a good working box with up to date contrls.

The thing is, these units are sooo small in the '60s GlobeTrotters to begin with, I think it's only 3.5 cu ft or so, to have a false front with a smaller unit behind it would make the fridge almost non-existant!

No, I don't think so. Ours is a RM-35 also. It's a '60s model number...we could not find a equally sized replacement, the new ones were either too tall, too short, too wide, too narrow...none were "just right". Which is why we chose to have ours re-built.

IMO, unless you are rebuilding the cabinets surrounding it, it just looks kludgee and/or obviously replaced.
