Information overload - advice for new 12v fridge in '75 Argosy

We have a '75 26' Argosy that the 2-way fridge has died in.

For our needs, we're going with a 12v fridge and looking for a ~4cu ft model with freezer.

I've been digging, reading, and am at the point where I have no clue which brand to go with.

Recpro makes a 4.4 (supposedly it's a bit smaller) with separate freezer which looks enticing based on the price but I've not found a lot of references I trust on the reliability.

Dometic makes a few in the CRX line that are around triple the price.

Norcold makes a few.

And on and on...

Feedback?

I have been anticipating being in a similar situation with my 1978 Minuet 6.0 Metre, but have not made the purchase yet. I have been researching for over three years, and Nova Kool always comes out at or near the top of any ratings that I have found. They have also been building the 12-Volt DC/120-Volt AC refrigerators for quite some time so have a marketing track record, and it seems to be good. They offer several sizes including single door as well as double door. They also offer a conversion unit that allows one to convert their existing absorption refrigerator to 12-Volt DC/120-Volt AC refrigerator.

Good luck with your research!

Kevin

Welcome to the forums. Our first Airstream was a '76 Argosy, we really enjoyed it and are now several down the road. Going on our third Dometic CRX110, 3 different rigs. Have mostly been very happy with performance. Wanted it first of all for the height being to fit under a 36" counter. Also, for comparable size of the outside box fits a lot inside. Much lighter than the original fridge. You will hear the fan run so not silent like propane. Upper handle to open/close could be stonger. Freezer not huge but works well. Cooling can be a little uneven inside so you have to learn how to arrange things (beer in back lower shelf) and to leave space at the back for air circulation. We boondock a fair amount, have 250 amp hours of AGM battery and 400 watts of solar and the combo works well with the fridge. Draw , if I remember right, is around 3.5 amps, maybe around 75 amp/hours a day. We live in Colorado so solar is really good. Yeah the price, I was going to try a similar unit of a different brand on the last one but came across a brand new one on ebay for $350!!, I grabbed it. It was an Australian market version but I only run mine on 12v so that was fine. Turns out it's volatage range is wide and works fine on 110v also. If you think of anything else just ask.
Good luck, Mark D

Thanks for the advice both of you.

I think we decided on the Novakool R5810 12v version. It will basically fill the width of the opening completely and is only ~32" tall so we will gain some storage compared to the 56" original that's coming out.

Then again, maybe I'll find a steal like mrdes8 did, lol.

R5810 ordered, should have it in a few weeks. Our first trip is 7 weeks from today.

I love it when a plan comes together.
