My 1994 doesn't have the auto shutoff, so it was after that.

That started as part of the OPD valve, I believe in 1998.

Then you need your cylinders updated with OPD valves to get them filled, unless they are designed to be used in the horizontal position.

The sun shines then it doesn’t. The crows gather then they disappear. The battery dies and your refrigerator goes warm. The food it spoils. We conserve yet we use. This stream of consciousness should be useful or just a reflection of myself? Ponder….

If they're built into the tank valves themselves then I guess I have them now, since I replaced my tanks with new about two years ago.

I thought this was a separate piece installed external to the tank.

According to this source the OPD valve on new tanks has some functionality as a flow cutoff but is not 100% effective:

https://technorv.com/blogs/articles/...propane-safety

From what I've been able to find, it appears that the automatic regulator Airstream uses also has the ability to shut off a free-flowing gas feed and I assume that is the device that was referenced earlier as being installed in Airstream trailers for decades.

As long as the integrity of the hoses from tank to regulator and the regulator itself haven't been compromised then there shouldn't be a problem. Unpredictable things can happen in an accident, however, and having a backup device which helps ensure that the open valves on the propane tanks themselves get closed, rather than something operating downstream, seems like a good idea. Overkill? Maybe. TEHO.
