Dometic Refrigerator parts for a '73 Airstream
I need a new heating element for my Dometic Refrigerator. It is the original refrigerator. Are parts for that year still available? I have been looking all over the Internet and have not found replacement heating elements. The unit works great on propane.

Brian,
That's going to be a tough one! Dometic does not support units that are of that age. I think your best bet would be to get the spec on the wattage of the old heating element and you could possibly use one from a newer unit that had the same specifications.
There are lots of different heating elements, and it is generally not a good idea to mix/match them with different wattages.
Perhaps if you have an original owners manual, it will give you the wattage of the element, and you can start from there.

There are some brand "X" heating elements that are available.
Please list the reefer make and model number for correct identification of which heating element you need. A previous owner could have switched to a different brand from original.

Brian,
Not to be stealing your thread, but I'm trying to find a gas thermostat knob (it broke from being brittle) for the Dometic in our 77 Argosy. I checked with Sutton RV in Eugene and they said Dometic no longer makes those either. I can turn it with a pair of pliars, but don't know exactly what setting it's set on. This is no Hi Tech part. Basically a "D" knob with the male part on the knob to fit into the "D" shaped metal female part of the fridge. Has anyone found another replacement knob that fits by chance. I was considering going to Goodwill and looking for any appliance that had similar knob and buying it just for the knob! It's getting harder to find any appliance or electronics with a knob of that configuration today.

With respect to the D knob, have you looked at old radios and TVs? They had D knobs as well. Not ideal, but might work in a pinch.

Jim, I have the same Dometic that Brian has that I am parting out. Sorry Brian, the electric heating element is already gone. Jim, If you can email a picture of the knob you need, I might have one.

I'll get some pics and email them to you. A Dometic knob would of course be preferrable. I've not tried radio knobs yet, but I've got some old radios and was going to try them.
Thanks for the responses Jim & Cameron.

It's hidden in the box on the right side of the back.
The heating element looks similar to those in a soldering iron.

This may work.
I bought a new element for the fridge in my '74 Argosy from RV Dealership.com . The Phone # 1-800-325-9250. The email address is rvdealership@rvdealership.com . The description and part # for the heating element is:
Part Number 48-9506
Element, Heating 150W/110V
2 wire 11/16 x 4 3/4
MFG # CS000017
Like Andy said it's located on the right rear of the refer behind a sheetmetal shield, inside a tube, just above and to the left of the burner, there are 2 wires attached to it, the wires in mine had ceramic beads around them for high temp, the wattage and voltage was stamped on the body of the old element. If I remember correctly, the vender had a list of all Dometic refers with the heating element used in a specific model. Good Luck

Finding the heating element
Here are a couple of photos. Just to the right of my hand is a sheetmetal cover, you can see a name plate on it. The heating element is behind that cover, the red sheathed cable just above my hand is the wiring for the new element that I installed. I was showing someone how to lite the burner manually from the back of the refer in the photo with my hand.
