I'm not sure this applies as much to running the unit on electric power, because I suspect it's more of an issue with the hotter gas flame. However, I've seen a presentation on mods to the cooling unit (basically wrapping the appropriate part of the tubing in insulating tape) that sharply improved performance on marginal units. The refrigerant hits the freezer section first, and if all of the gas condenses to liquid in the freezer there's nothing left for cooling the refrigerator section.
The presentation was done by Tim Kendziorski, a former president of the VAC. I don't know if he has any printed or online material available to detail the improvements.
