There was nothing obvious to either of us, e.g., to push in or turn on while holding heat on the Klixon. But all we had were some wimpy grill lighters, so maybe that was the problem -- I'm hoping!
All the helpful-looking links on this thread are no longer functioning. Can anyone refresh my memory? Or do I just need to go get a mini-torch?

Lynne, Don't lose hope! When I would light our old fridge, I would count to approximately 140 while using a bbq lighter waiting for the 'click'. After getting a small torch, I would count to about 20. Here's a link to the torch I had:

Procedures as I remember them:
1) turn propane tanks on.
2) light the stove or furnace for a minute or two to get propane in the lines. Choose appliance as close to the refer as possible to get the propane system running.
3) turn thermostat on fridge to coldest setting. This is important for maximum gas flow to the Klixon valve.
3) turn the old black gas valve on the refer itself 90 degrees to allow gas to flow to refer regulator, thermostat and Klixon valve.
4) light torch and point carefully at base of metal tab. I like to warm the tab and circular base together. you WILL hear a faint or loud 'click' from the Klixon valve and you will see flame come from the burner. I always liked to keep the flame on for another 10 or so seconds to make sure the gas is flowing completely (mine always had some air in the lines so the flame was faint at first.)
5) check flame every few minutes. If the metal tab isn't getting warm enough from the flame, it will cause the valve to close and turn off the flame.
It took about 12-14 hours to get cold, so we would always light the burner the night before we were going to leave for a trip.
If the flame is weak, take the burner apart carefully and clean it with compressed air or some other delicate means. Ours was full of soot and rust from the flue above it. Very excited to hear you are working on yours. Don't give up hope!!!!!
Post some pictures of your proud flame! I may have access to a working working Klixon valve if you need.
