Is this the same frig as the subject of the original post in 2006? I'm saving one dollar a day so I can buy a new refrigerator in three years. Do I have a good plan?

Eastern South Dakota is very pretty with hills, rivers, and trees.

It is the same one. And I've had it working 3 times since 2006, but haven't left it on more than overnight because needed to repair door liner & replace gasket, and didn't really NEED to use it till now.

Yes, you have a good plan!

On my '61 Dometic M50 gas only there is a gas valve to turn on first, turn 45 degrees and hold the pilot light button while lighting until the Kilxon valve opens. This Dometic service manual may help.

Sorry, it didn't attach the file, I'm on an IPad, I'll post again when I get to my home computer.

OK, let try this again. This is a very good service manual for these old Dometic refrigerators. Also, turn the gas valve 90 degrees to turn on the gas (until it stops).

My trailer has been stationary and in use merely as a guest room for the past 3 years, and so I've been slow to repair the inside door liner of the original Dometic fridge, to build a chase for the new vents I installed high and low behind it, or to find a new gasket for the door.

But now I'm getting ready to start using the trailer for camping, so working on fridge again, and had my RV tech out yesterday to work on a couple of other things.

He and I were BOTH frustrated because, although I've gotten the Klixon valve lit and the fridge working three times before -- most recently about 18 months ago with him -- NEITHER ONE OF US CAN REMEMBER HOW WE DID IT! I mean, I do remember having to hold heat on the Klixon a long time, but is there some obscure kind of gas valve to turn on first? There was nothing obvious to either of us, e.g., to push in or turn on while holding heat on the Klixon. But all we had were some wimpy grill lighters, so maybe that was the problem -- I'm hoping!

All the helpful-looking links on this thread are no longer functioning. Can anyone refresh my memory? Or do I just need to go get a mini-torch?

Thanks!

Lynne, Don't lose hope! When I would light our old fridge, I would count to approximately 140 while using a bbq lighter waiting for the 'click'. After getting a small torch, I would count to about 20. Here's a link to the torch I had:

Amazon.com: Bernz-o-matic 019133/ST2200T Micro Flame Butane Torch Kit: Home Improvement

Procedures as I remember them:

1) turn propane tanks on.
2) light the stove or furnace for a minute or two to get propane in the lines. Choose appliance as close to the refer as possible to get the propane system running.
3) turn thermostat on fridge to coldest setting. This is important for maximum gas flow to the Klixon valve.
3) turn the old black gas valve on the refer itself 90 degrees to allow gas to flow to refer regulator, thermostat and Klixon valve.
4) light torch and point carefully at base of metal tab. I like to warm the tab and circular base together. you WILL hear a faint or loud 'click' from the Klixon valve and you will see flame come from the burner. I always liked to keep the flame on for another 10 or so seconds to make sure the gas is flowing completely (mine always had some air in the lines so the flame was faint at first.)
5) check flame every few minutes. If the metal tab isn't getting warm enough from the flame, it will cause the valve to close and turn off the flame.

It took about 12-14 hours to get cold, so we would always light the burner the night before we were going to leave for a trip.

If the flame is weak, take the burner apart carefully and clean it with compressed air or some other delicate means. Ours was full of soot and rust from the flue above it. Very excited to hear you are working on yours. Don't give up hope!!!!!

Post some pictures of your proud flame! I may have access to a working working Klixon valve if you need.

Ryan.

Thanks to everyone for the input! Family issues blew up and pulled me away from the trailer for awhile, but I plan to get back to the refer problem tomorrow.

The manual is great, and actually references my model. However, just like neither I nor the (vintage specialist) RV tech can see a valve anywhere to turn on, the manual has no diagrams of where it might be. And my original pictures I posted of underneath the fridge don't seem to show one either. Yet, I KNOW it has been successfully lit by me 3 times!?!

Really feel like I'm losing my mind. Will post again after my next investigation, with a mini-torch.

Check on page 28 of the service manual, Fig. 41, #1 gas cock.
