Angry Airstream Dometic Refrigerators RECALL (FIRE HAZARD)

Hey Guys and Girsl

Has anyone out there had a recall notice on the Dometic Refrigerator. Covers Safari, International, Interstate, Parkway, Land yacht, Classic, and Sky Deck. Years 2004 thru 2007.

Problem. Fatigue crack can develope in the boiler tube of the Identified refrigerators, which can permit the release of pressurized coolant solution. If this solution is exposed to an ignition source under certain specific circumstances, it can result in vehicle fire.

Affected refrigerator models :
The potentially affected refrigerators have the following model numbers: NDR1062, RM2652, RM2662, RM2663, RM2852, RM2862, RM3663, RM3662, RM3862

If you own one of the following units, it requires immediate service and continuing use could pose a potentiol safety hazard.

If your are in doubt Call 1-888-446-5157 or go to Dometic.

What to do if you have one of the models recalled.

1. Turn the refrigerator off immediately if you notice any of the following indicators:

Leakage or staining at the back of the refrigerator.
Yellow residue at the back or sides of the refrigerator.
The smell of ammonia
Refrigerator does not properly cool.

ANY UNIT FOUND TO HAVE ONE OR MORE OF THE CHARACTERISTICS MENTIONED ABOVE MUST BE SHUT DOWN AND NOT OPERATED UNTIL UNIT IS FIXED AND THE RECALL REWORK ADMINISTERED.

If none of the above signs are present but your unit does fall under the recall, Dometic recommends the following.

2. Do not operate your refrigerator on LP gas under ANY circumstances. Switching to electric power lowers the incident rate associated with LP gas. If you have a 3 way ref. 12 power carries the least riskof all.

Dometic recommends that the units not be operated on Electic unless absolutely necessary until unit is serviced.

For most up to date recall info on these units call 1-888-446-5157.

If you no longer own a model make and year Airstream, please call the above number and let Dometic know a name and number if possible of the new owner.

If the repair facility fails or is unabe to rework this noncompliance without charge and within a reasonable time, please contact us at the number provided above so we can attempt to resolve the problem. You may also submt a written complaint to the Administrator , National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. 1200 New Jersey Avenue, SE, Washington, DC 20590, or call toll free Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236, or go to Safercar.gov.

PS: Airstream, in cooperation w/ Dometic will provide owners of all covered refrigerators a rework for the potential defect at no charge for parts or labor. The rework consist of secondary burner housing, a thermal fuse and a melt fuse.

the letter i received did not indicate that my serial # was in the recall.however when i punched my model and serial # onto the dometic website my refrig is under recall.my ad indicated that the letter came out prior to an expansion of refrigs that are under recall.they told me to bring my trailer in and they would do the recall fix which takes less than one hour.point is make sure you check the recall thru the dometic website on your trailer.

I have been hit twice by Dometic recalls. AS of Spokane caught both of them and fixed them on the spot.

The recall has been going on for some time now. I just got another letter from Airstream last week. I had this taken care of back early this summer. Apparently Dometic and Airstream both have been sending letters. This latest one was my fourth for the same problem. The first two letters I was not one of the affected. The last two was the expanded list and I was included.

Yep, got my letter this weekend. But I have the RM-2451 single-door model, which isn't part of the campaign according to the website.

I wonder how different the boiler tube apparatus is between the single v two door models?

Cheers,
-jd.

Received a recall notice from Dometic in July, and we were on the list. A local RV shop was listed as a repair site. Service took about 40 minutes. Just received a 2nd recall notice this week, this time from Airstream, for the same item.

It was nice to receive the letter a month after completing my 3M trip (Massachusetts to Montana then Massachusetts to the Maritimes) totaling 10,000 miles. Heard nothing about it at International in Bozeman, and Dometic was exhibiting there. Maybe I wasn't listening hard enough!

I received the letter too. I called Airstream factory to see if this is the same recall I got a letter on back in July. They confirmed that it is the same recall that was fixed in July and there has been only 1 recall.

I just checked the s/n from our fridge and it appears to be included in the recall.

We just bought the trailer used last month, so I have emailed Dometic to see if they keep records as to whether or not the recall work has already been completed before I start trying to figure out what to do & where to take it. (I should be so lucky!)

Incidentally, if I am reading things correctly, it seems to me that Dometic's "fix" is just a bandaid to hopefully stop your trailer from going up in flames.

It doesn't address the problem of leaking boiler tubes.

I guess if/when the tube springs a leak, we are on our own to pay for a replacement unit unless it is still under the initial three year warrantee. Assuming of course that you have had an authorized agent check over the fridge each year as required by Dometic in order to maintain the warrantee in effect ! Great!!

My airstream is (still!) (again!) in the shop so it is not here to check the numbers.
Does this re-call apply to any of the '92 land yachts?

Dometic has voluntarily recalled a population of two-door
refrigerators manufactured between April 1997 and May 2003.

Here is what the Dometic web site says:

UPDATE:

Dometic Recall Information

Dometic Voluntarily Expands Refrigerator Recall

Dometic recently expanded its recall on a population of two-door refrigerators.

The original recall included some two-door refrigerators manufactured between

April 1997 and May 2003. The recent expansion of this recall now includes the

same two-door refrigerators, manufactured between June 2003 and September

2006.
To find out if your refrigerator falls within either of the recalls, enter the model and 8-digit serial number of your Dometic refrigerator below.
