serial number confusion
I ambuying an AS trailer today. Serial number O23DOJ101. according to the factory websight this is an overlanderbuilt in1969 sold as a 1970 and is 23 feet long with double beds and rear bath. However the trailer is marked as a safari landyacht on the outside. What would be the difference between an overlander and a safari? This unit also has only one axle with the full bath across the rear. zz

Trim levels are (I) International, (E) Excella, and (L) Land Yacht, so your leading "O" is a little weird. The rest of your VIN is according to the standard. In 1969 a 23' was definitely a Safari. 25' was a Tradewind and 27' was an Overlander. There is no way a 23' was "mistakenly" manufactured as an Overlander. Call them back and get someone on the phone who hasn't been drinking.
I would like to know what the leading "O" in your VIN might mean.

Maybe a way to seperate the 1970 from the 1980? Seems like somebody has asked that question before, just can't remember right now.

Serial is for a 1970 23' Safari with a double bed. O is NOT for Overlander

Here's a chart of pre 1980 that I got from Airstream - it shows the O usage. It also includes some of the same info. Zep posted above. The use of the O would appear to make it 1968 or older.....

Lengths were measured bumper to ball. So total length could be up to 23' 11". R.J. Dial's website shows 'O' (or I trim level) as a prefix for the '69 Safari and 'B' as a prefix for the '70 Safari. 'O' is sometimes used as a placekeeper elsewhere in some older Airstream VINs, thus the first O may mean nothing.
1970 model trailers would have been produced as early as May of 1969. As with automobiles it is common to have a year model (1970 in your case) produced well back in the year before. R.J. Dial frequently shows a serial number range but doesn't on either of these models. One can only guess if 1970 Safari production started with 001 or 101. Is the 'O' a Monday mixup during the transition period? That's my guess. Maybe 47WeeWind might take a leap...

The leading "O" is not an "oh" it's a "0" aka "zero".
It's just a placeholder that means it's doesn't have the International upgrade trim package. This "O = Overlander" myth keeps getting purpetuated by that one lousey " Pre 1980 Serial Number Identification" chart out there online. The first page is wrong (where it refers to O=Overlander), the second one that Zep posted is much more accurate than the first...
Page one here is the BAD VIN DECODER... even though it resides on the Airstream website. Page two is more accurate execpt it still doesn't address the "0" vs "O".
Overlander was the designation for the 26'+/- trailer of the era - not a trim package for all lengths of trailers.

Correct. The "O" is a "zero" not an "oh" and it doesn't mean Overlander.

Generally an International had that cool badge on the side, some different colors inside, different configurations of appliances, and some different lighting, both interior and exterior.

I'll start with some foggy recall from Fred Coldwell discussing this on Welcome to the Frontpage - The Vintage Airstream Podcast. In the 50s at least, park models were 120 volt only. Did they rely on a hose water hookup? International models were for road use and had 12 volt wiring. Gas lights? Did Internationals uniquely have the pressurized water systems? I'm not sure what distinctions would have carried through to the 1970 model.
