'69 Safari Bathroom Question - Please Advise

I have a thread on my repairs, but wanted to throw this out to the group to see if anyone knew. My bathroom on my '69 safari has a few items above the tub that I question. I think the PO may have added something, but then again it may have come from the factory this way. There are 3 shelves and a drop down door just above the tub on curbside. The drop down door has a piece of wood inside and due to moisture has split. There are also 3 shelves that are reinforced with wood. I just do not see where moisture and wood will ever mix. Wanting to keep it as original as possible, should I put these back in? remove and fill the holes? any thoughts? I looked for pics of other safari's in my years and found one picture. Fotochop's does not have the shelving? I'm confused

Thanks for any advice...

Our 1969 Safari has those shelves too. I thought they were fiberglass though.
