Throughout our travels, we were surprised how many small towns were taken over by corporate America (fast food taking a choke hold). With that said, we found wonderful people in:
Bend Oregon
Eugene Oregon
Asheville North Carolina (Pisgah NF)
Saranac Lake New York
Leadville Colorado
Glenwood Springs/Carbondale/Basalt Colorado
Boulder Colorado
Nother exactly super small towns, and have plenty more travels ahead of us. We want to explore Bozeman Montana for sure, then many others mentioned above.
Scheduled to pick up our Airstream (and truck) in Spring 2017!
Cheers!

Little towns
Some may not agree, but I adore Watertown, SD. Quiet, safe, and beautiful prairie vistas.
Deadwood has too many bikers compared to when I was a kid and it was quiet. Now it's just casinos.
Cody, Wyo is a must see.
Aladdin, WY
Salado, TX at Christmas
Marble Falls, TX
Fredericksburg, TX at peach time
Pigeon Forge, TN
Lockhart, TX for the BBQ

Because of this thread, I'm going to visit St Augustine, Florida for the holidays. With it being in the top ten most decorated towns for christmas, I have to visit. It has to be warmer than Baltimore, Maryland. When towns are mentioned more than three times by our seasoned travelers, it will be a must see for me. This list not only helps us, but helps the small towns as well. The commandery on Air Forums is second to none. Thanks for posting your towns.

You will enjoy ST Augustine, just remember some of the town may still be recovering from the hurricane but all is open for business.

Thanks for the heads up avionstream. Like St Augustine, I hope Gatlinburg, Tennessee bounces back as well. It is well worth visiting, with Dollywood nearby. The steam locomotive uses coal, like the old days. I'm sure these towns could use our business.

We were looking at a HarvestHosts membership as they seem to have some locations along 290 as well.
It is an easy drive over there for us so I imagine we will "try on" several campsites to see what works best for us.

Try Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park...you won't be disappointed! Be sure to eat at the Airport Diner just across the way.
Also, don't fforget to check out Luckenbach Tx...just a short drive from Fredericksburg.

Streaminwild, You will have a wonderful time on the First Coast! It may be a little warm for you- supposed to be in the 80's for Christmas- but enjoy the magic of the city Nights of Lights is the Christmas extravaganza and worth taking one of the sightseeing train tours to enjoy the sights (we like Old Town trolley, but they're all good). Walk St. George Street, see Fort Matanzas Nat'l Monument, and enjoy a libation at The Ice Plant (tour the in-house distillery there, too) or the Casa Monica Hotel.
Oh, and tour Flagler College- see the Tiffany windows, then cross the Bridge of Lions and have fried shrimp at O'Steens (cash only!). From there, enjoy walking to the top of the lighthouse, going to the Alligator Farm, and driving AIA to St. Augustine Beach- more fun to be had there Can you tell we love St. Augustine??? A vibrant community suffused with history- you'll be glad you went!
As far as the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew, businesses are open, debris has been cleared, but the city did take a pounding. Residences on the Intracoastal (west) side of A1A were hit harder than ocean side, but walking around downtown about a month after the storm, everything was up and running. May you have safe travels and a wonderful, memorable holiday!!

Folks, since someone brought it up I'm going to make a plea for everyone to consider traveling to Sevier County, Tennessee this winter and Spring and spending your money there. The towns in that county are Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and Sevierville. There were literally 1,000's of fires that burned all over the mountains, devastating the region. Many areas are still closed but the main business street in Gatlinburg is open. There are several campaigns to raise funds - such as Dolly Parton's "My People Fund" - to try to help the residents and businesses get back on their feet. The Mayor of Gatlinburg lost both his home and his business. This is going to be a hard struggle back. Please consider spending some money in this wonderful region!
Sorry for the commercial, but if you love camping in the mountains then please support the recovery efforts.

Thanks. Will definitely keep that in mind.
Those pictures on the news were heartbreaking.

Great post kfrere,
I've always wanted to go there and what better way to help out a community than to spend some money on their businesses and get a vacation at the same time.
Maybe someone could organize a rally to get airstreamers to the area.

Very true. Bayfield is a lovely little town.
"The Docks" at the Marina is an excellent place for a meal as well.

Could see myself living a quiet, happy life in Wall, SD. As long as there's covered storage for the Airstream, as the Dakotas can get hail from time to time. SD gets a lot of fair weather and can very much be considered a sunshine state.
Wall reminds me of the town where I grew up, Centerville, TN (pop. 2600), aka: Grinder's Switch, Minnie Pearl's hometown. And Centerville always reminded me of Mayberry, NC, except middle TN gets way too much rain for my taste. Which is why we ended up moving to AZ.
One more thing...Woodbury, TN has the same quaint feel as Wall and Centerville. All beautiful areas and Woodbury is less than 3 hrs from the Great Smokies.
