Winter Camping in Zion

Anyone ever go camping at Zion Park in Utah in the winter. Thinking of going next month. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

ardenrj!
Welcome to the forum.

Boy, been there in summer. Would love to see it in winter.

I'm sure some real advice is on the way.

Its an absolutely beautiful place but quite a bit of elevation. Your could easily get into snow and ice. We crossed a pass at 11,000' getting there.

sooooo..... you live east of Colorado. Keep dropping hints and we'll figure out where you live, despite the paucity of info under your avatar!

For years there has been a free campground bewteen Virgin and Rockville, located between the highway and the river. I haven't passed by there in a year, however. It's about where the circled 9 is on the map.

On the way in or out, there's a potential boondocking spot at exit 133 off of I-15, on the west side. It's a 100 yard segment of the old highway about 100 yards off the exit--level, reasonably quiet, and not a soul in sight at that exit. There's also good boondocking on both sides of exit 4, Black Rock, south of St George.

All these locations are below 4,500', but can be cold if it's a particularly cold week. However, St George isn't called Dixie for nothing--nearly the same temperatures as Vegas.

There's not much boondocking east of the Park, but some very inexpensive RV parks in Orderville and Mt Carmel, about 12 miles east. I recall there is an RV parkhalfway along that road, maybe just across the road from the Buffalo Cafe, which is a fun place. There's also an RV park near the east gate, which has bare camping spots, also. I don't know if they are open in the winter.

If you're a rock climber, there's a highly rated climbing park up in the gorge on the south side of Veyo (NNW of St George 18 miles).

Years ago I visited Zion in April , 80 deg. , woke up to 30 deg. and 5" of snow . You never know what you'll hit , go prepared and have fun .

Was there in November of 2004 but no true winter experience. Weather was perfectly clear and mild. Got chilly pretty quick in those canyon walls, but no snow. It is one of the most beautiful places I've visited and I wouldn't hesitate to go back.

Drove by yesterday

Hi Sugarfoot, We were up in Park City for the last 10 days waiting for a window to bring our new 20'Safari SE from Draper back to San Diego. We went for it yesterday and arrived home today. Our original intent had been to break up the trip with a few days at Zion. Well --- plans need to flow with the weather at this time of year. The whole of Utah was under a blanket of snow. WE drove on. Waking up in Vegas this AM we had a dusting of snow on the rig with more snow 1/2 way to Barstow. When we drove by the Zion exit off of 15 yesterday there was about 6" of snow along the freeway with air temp about 22 degrees. Our decision was to pass on Zion as it was at a higher altitude and the next storm was coming in. I think we made the proper choice for us as we were not prepared for the single digit temps we felt we might be in for. If you decide to go for it, have a fallback destination. Lake Meade, Death Valley? If you and your rig are prepared for the low temps and you have the time to hang out if more snow locks you in, do it. The mountains looked really beautiful as we drove by. Best to you. 3DogNight
PS we made it home without problem and can't believe all the good times we are in for with our new AS. Email me if you have more specific questions.

That's OK, snow blindness, maybe?

Winter Camping in Zion

There are height and length restrictions in the park due to a tunnel built in the 1930's. A special permit is required to pull a trailer through. Be sure to have accurate measurements for your vehicles.

70's Airstreams meet the width restriction, but they often still make you wait for an escort, but you don't have to pay the fee. I don't recall the length restriction. I will tell you that in the wee hours you can haul butt through the tunnel, since no one is one duty.... ... saw my first ring tailed cat in there at 2 AM one trip.
