If you want to mountain bike in NC Tsali is the place to go. The mountain bikers rave about it. I am sure there are some camp grounds close by.

There are spots at Elkmont the last two weekends in June but only two the third week in the count. Nothing the first two weekends of June. There is a meadow campground too but I am not familiar with it. Umf.

I posted earlier today. It doesn't surprise me on the difficulty getting into Elkmont. In the past, you have to make reservations the minute they are available if you want to get on the river. But a couple of other choices that are great too are Ft Mountain and Cloudland Canyon State Parks. Ft Mountain has a very nice lake to swim or paddleboat around in.

Most army crops of engineer CG's are nice and usually on the water. We stayed at cotton hill and Eastbank in GA on our shakedown outing in December. Would go back to either. Check availability on www.recreation.gov.

Vogel state park is awesome! we stay there every year in October. there is a gorgeous lake that you can canoe on and fish, there are many nice hiking trails and you can walk around the lake to the back side to see the waterfall. there are also other waterfalls close by to see and the really cute Dutch town of Helen Georgia that you can park and walk around. the town of Hiawassee Georgia has a nice camp ground on a lake also.

Here is one of my favorite campgrounds...
http://www.reserveamerica.com/campin...O&parkId=71356
Walk over to the swimming beach with some bread slices, sit in the water and break up the bread and you will have a swarm of fish around you.
If you can bring a boat, the many coves are stunning. The clear water is beautiful.
Bring ice, the nearest store is +10 miles.

Hilton Head SC is a great beach with many great restaurants and 45 minutes from downtown Savannah and 2 hours from Charleston SC. You could tour charleston and savannah one day and relax the rest. The resort is very upscale and has many high end RVers. It has a boat dock, nice restaurant and pool on the water.
If you do decide to come to Hilton Head PM me and il send you a guide of the area. We are locals and can suggest several places. We will even take you on a ride on our boat in exchange for a tour of the airstream. We are a young family also in the market for a AS so I always like to hear how other families like their experience.
I would also suggest Hunting Island state park which is nearby. You could even do both

What an amazing offer !!!
Too long a drive for us for that trip but that area is on a short list for us so we will hunt you down likely in 2015!!!
Thanks everyone else for all the amazing ideas - I'll be looking through them in detail this weekend and make a final choice

Lake Lurleen State Park outside Tuscaloosa has great mountain biking trails. And while you are planning why don't you hit Oak Mountain State Park just south of Birmingham? Some of the best riding in Dixie.

I was going to mention Lake Lurleen State Park. It is on the north side of 82 west of Tuscaloosa/Northport.

we used to more regularly bike at oak mountain...we will be camping there this spring pretty often I think...honestly as soon as there is a 50 degree plus weekend, we will likely go to oak mountain.
Had not thought about lake lurleen....ill give it some thought....probably though we can hit the closer spots up for many other weekend trips.

Monte Sano State Park here in Huntsville has more mountain bike trails than any place I know of in this area. They are very rough rocky technical trails for the most part. I need to get out there on my bike soon.

If you want me to show you around sometime let me know. I know all the trails up here. There is also a Huntsville Land Trust that has lots of trails.

Reserved Vogel
But you all have given many more ideas
That one on Tom Bigbee looks really nice too and pretty close by
This spring and summer we will most weekends be hitting places close by (within 2 hour drive lets say)

Vogel is great, but also consider Stone Mountain, just east of Atlanta, in the future. Really nice sites, lake, lots of activities for you and kids with a shuttle bus within the park.
