Do not cut down the westerly road MT-49 between St. Mary's and Two Medicine (or the town of East Glacier). It is signed barring vehicles longer than about 25' for good reason -- many, many tight switchbacks with absolutely no shoulder.

We really enjoyed Many Glacier. Enjoyed the boat ride on the lake. We arranged the second boat ride over to Lake Josephine and the short naturalist-led hike to Grinnell Lake. You can make those arrangements through the lodge on Swiftcurrent Lake at Many Glacier.

Every chance I get, I'll recommend visiting and camping up at Waterton Lakes and the campsite right in town there. Need a passport for exit & entry however...

Most of the campsites in Glacier are pull-throughs with a wide mix of tight trees and stumps. Keep your eyes open! We had to back out more than once -- cuz pulling through (even with rehitching the truck) was not an option. Apgar is quite a bit more 20+ footer friendly than Fish Creek.

A solid food recommendation near St. Mary's and another near West Glacier -- http://www.airforums.com/forums/f42/...tml#post867265

arrived in Cut Bank

Riverview Rv park...nice...went exploring this afternoon...wanted to check out the dreded MT49...from east glacier headed to St Marys from US 2...I was not pulling trailer...but did not see a reason not to...take it easy and watch the curves
However , tomorrow we are exploring further...going to Many glacier and St Marys via MT 464 to check that route as it is supposed to be the better route, however MT 89 does go from MT 49 intersection up to St Marys and beyond to Chief Mountain...

and as I am homeless and with no passport and possibly illegal after having lost my Couth in Vietnam I wouldn't be allowed out of the country or back in should i get out

Thursday is official day to move into the park

what campgrounds in Glacier

I am going first to St Marys, i tried to scope it out today and they would not let anyone in if not currently camping...because of road repaving
So I said what about tomorrow?? and they said if you are camping , that is registered for that day, yes you could come in....checked out Many Glacier and it was awash with sheeple...thick as fleas...oh well...there is a camp ground there?? first come first serve...saw an airstream headed there...no numbers...

i will report from St Marys and from the "Going to the Sun Road".....
later

freak show of nature

as John Stienbeck so eloquently expresses in his Travels with Charlie the worlds natural wonders are just that" freak shows of nature",,,where us humans come to gawk and by this ever inscent gawking cause their demise....

so these purple mountains majesties with their magnificient glaciers and streams and lakes and ever reaching fruited plains have been ever so corrrupted by our trapsing around.....

and so it goes

disappointed with East Glacier

But the travel along US 2 west to the west side of the park is impressive as well as the entire west side of glacier NP...staying at Fish Creek A35 and have done peliminary investigations and will conclude tomorrow...but surmise that the west side should not be missed...ethe east side is nice???

but west glacier is supremely beautiful!!!!!!! going all the way to the sun early tomorrow AM before the crowds awaken....and see who lurks the mountains in the dawns early light

Don't know what that means. Yes, St. Mary's looks way too convenient and forest growth indeed is trammeled down there (wind shadow effect from the mountains?). After Lake McDonald we headed to Many Glacier -- an experience as supreme as the Lake McDonald area. There are at least 3 days of good activities at Many Glacier -- more or less depending on whether you ride the boats to Lake Josephine/Grinnell Glacier and hike to Redrock Lake. A flyrod is a plus...

Two Medicine is pretty low-key and nice as it goes. Beats the St. Mary's campground 2:1 IMO!

relative term

compared to west glacier, east glacier looks like a slum IMHO; east glacier is indeed beautiful in its own way...many glacier is a disapointment relative to its hype, but still beautiful...a boat ride is a boat ride, water is water,...lake superior is a grand body of water...

hiking with hundreds of others on the same trail is not in my playbook...

polebridge, Montana

Polebridge is a small town ? North of Fish Creek in West Glacier...one road that gets you there is the outside loop/...a paved, dirt semi improved gravel road and the 25 miles takes about 35 minutes...Once there you find a Mercantile Company; housing a bakery that serves the best hot sandwiches, breads and rolls to be found for miles to return to West Glacier one can go back the way one came or one can take the inner loop...a primitive...very primitive road that traverses the insides of west glacier NP...a beautiful trip of 5 and 10 miles per hour...making the return trip 1 1/2 hours but surely worth every minute
assorted shots of many glacier and the sun road from the east

Glacier West

I cannot say how neat and exciting the drive down the North Fork road was...from Polebridge to Fish Creek.....30 miles primitive, winding one lane road....in the middle of the western edge of glacier national park...as wild and unspoiled as it gets....
