White Sands to Las Vegas NM

We will be heading from Tucson to the Las Vegas NM area in the motor home next week and instead of the usual I-25 want to try 70 thru White Sands to 54 then 84 into Las Vegas. Want to stay the first night in the Ruidoso area. Any recommendations of privately owned parks to stay in the area near Ruidoso with hookups that we can reserve? How is the road, Google shows only 25 additional minutes as opposed to I-25.

I have just completed that exact route this past weekend, towing my Classic 33. Overall, the roads are in pretty good shape. Traffic was less than I had anticipated. It took me about an hour longer than GPS predicted, but I choose to go slow up and down the mountains.

I don't have any RV park recommendations for you.

It's all good road. It's hot here in southern NM but may feel cool compared to Tucson. Eagle Creek RV park in Alto (next to Ruidoso) is a nice spot with good hosts and cooler temps. Lotta Texans...White Sands is interesting to see, Town of Lincoln, NM is where Billy the Kid hung out and jailed.

Thanks, called Eagle Creek and they squeezed us in! Sounds pretty crowded up there!

Thanks Peter, trip is going as well as can be expected. Saw 52 degrees F today between Mora and Penasco at 9,200 feet just south of Sipapu. Nice after leaving Tucson Thursday at 113F- tried to run generator on I-10 to keep coach cool but it shut down on over-temp after 20 min or so.
Sadly I can no longer recommend the Mora Inn and RV park...we left after a few hours as the power was dropping to 98 volts (really glad I had the Progressive EMS) and some full time residents now stay there in some rough looking trailers and were already partying when we arrived, plus one of their unleashed little dogs charged me and followed me back to my rig trying to bite me the whole time, so scratch that one off the list.
Eagle Creek was great and now at las vegas Koa, then on to the Trailer Ranch in Sante Fe which has good reviews.
If anyone is interested they just opened 3 brand new full hookup sites at Sipapu, $65 per night, beautiful cool country.
