I hope to do a short trip in early March just to get away after having my brakes inspected and wheelbearing repacked. I then hunt turkey for several weekends + a few extra days before going to the Georgia Mountain Spring Fling in Chattsworth. Who knows after that but I plan on burning up some annual time during the middle of a number of weeks.

A week in Bangkok.

A visit to Rocky Mountain National Park plus a few days in Yellowstone and maybe a stop in Badlands on our way home.

just starting

We're committed to a trial run in June. It will be our first trailer overnight in the '63 GT.

If all goes well, we're thinking about the Region 1 rally and a few other weekends. If all goes well, we'll start a more serious restoration.

If everything goes according to plan, we'll do a couple months out west in '07.

We're headed to the Tucson area Monday or Tuesday then down to Organ Pipe Nat Monument for a few days then Quartzsite for another week. We just return from Tucson yesterday with our new 30' classic. To say we're happy is an understatement! Will make comments about the purchase, quality, wait and delivery on another thread.----Pieman

Congrats on your new Classic!

I would be interested to hear your comments about Quartzsite after you have been there.

Smile Trying some new (to us) campgrounds

We're going to try Twin Knobs Campground (Ky), Hungry Mother State Park (Va), Buckhorn Campground (Ky), and Sterling State Park (Mi) on our trip back and forth from NC this summer. Looking forward to seeing the Daniel Boone/Hal Rogers Parkway instead of driving past it. Gotta get out the checklists and maps!

I used to work on the lake summers, albeit 20 years ago.... Anyway LBL is no longer administered by the Army Corps but by the National Forest Service as a national recreation area. A couple highlights you dont want to miss are the Old home place (some images from my gallery http://www.pbase.com/professor_chaos..._bw_historical ) which is an 1860s living history set up and the bison and elk prarie which you drive through ( the place is just what its name implies). There is also Ft Donaldson on the south end of the park http://www.nps.gov/fodo/
I hope you have a great trip, let me know if you need more specific information.

We'll be de-winterizing and heading down to the Big Bend National Park just before Easter to see the wildflower explosion just before the rest of Texas arrives! A few weeks back at home then over to Savannah, up to Charleston and over to Virginia and some of their great state parks like Claytor Lake and Hungry Mother to name a couple of our favorites. CIAO.

April Spring Break (kids, dog) to Fort DeSoto County Park near St. Petersburg, FL. One of the most beautiful campgrounds ever, pristine beaches, kayak with dolphins, biking, swimming. Very popular, need to make reservations way in advance, but worth it! Plenty to do if you travel with kids, but great either way.

2006 In New England

After making the decision to retire in New England we're looking forward to leisurely exploring all that it has to offer. i.e. The White Mountains, the Maine Coast, Nova Scotia, Quebec, Prince Edward Island, The Adirondacks, New Brunswick, Vermont, etc. We can reach virtually the entire area on one tank of diesel out - and one tank back. From our home in central Maine, we can round-trip Acadia National Park, as well as other choice locations, on one tank.

Last year we drove over 6,000 miles (Maine to Florida and points beyond) which - for us - was just too much driving and not enough enjoyment. Drive less and stay longer seems to be our cup of tea!

nilesrob:

I raised my family camping at Ft. DeSota Park. I know that we spent well over 200 nights there - starting just after the campground first opened around 1964. The original plan was to restrict the park to tents only and the first bunch of sites was on the Southwesterly point. I believe that I was probably the first person to take an early model pop-up tent camper into the park. It was a "copy" of what was then known as a "Florida Camper." As I remember, we had to get permission from the Pinellas County Parks Director, Jim Work - who I later became more acquainted with through my work in marine construction. I think that we convinced Jim that the pop-up camper was nothing more than a tent on wheels - and he granted us permission. For quite a few years all anyone had to do was drive in, set up on any site, and then report to the office. Those were the best and happiest years I ever spent with my family. I stayed there again last year, for several weeks in the Airstream, while I re-modeled my condo on Tierra Verde. The campground was virtually the same fantastic place - but the rest was only memories!

Cottonwood campground in Big Bend is nicely shaded and some grass. Water available but no hookups (in Feb. 2001). Used to be a guy with a row boat that would offer to take you to Mexico for a dollar. Directly across the Rio Grande is the Mexican village of Santa Elana, about 30 homes. We went and had a great time. Have heard the rowboat guy has been shut down post 9-11 but you could check.

Hi,
We live near Lake Allatoona. We have spent many a weekend there. We recommend Allatoona Landing. You can get sites real near the lake. Nice pull throughs, swimming pool, store, bath houses, and lots of good neighbors. Let us know if you need any other info

Just got back from the first on of the camping season. went to the Tin Can Tourists rally in Cottonwood AZ. Had a good time, found some issues with he TradeWind that'll need attention before the next outing in April and we even managed to get a sunburn.
