Wheel lug nut question....

Greetings all:
I'm wanting to upgrade my lug nuts on my 2013 28'FC. At one time I had read on a different thread that a good nut to buy was a 1/2" - 20 thread, McGard #64010. I went down to my local Canada Tire store and they had all kinds of different McGard lug nuts but no #64010.

They did have a model number #64000 and the package says they are 1/2" - 20. So will these be the proper lug nuts to buy for my trailer?

Thanks in advance for an input....

Cheers
Doug

Can't say for sure, although it is possible.

If you go to Amazon.ca, you will find both are listed and they have very slight dimensional differences.

for example one is 1.5" long, the other 1.45"

one has a 3/4" hex, the other has 13/16" I think.

I know the lug nuts on our traier use a 3/4" socket - I thought most did.

Hope that is some help!

Brian.

Those are just fine the difference in the 64000 & 64010 is the 64010 is a "bulge" style nut that has a reduced wrench size (3/4") where more clearance is needed in a recessed pocket. The 64000 has a 13/16" wrench size. The thread size and bearing surface against the wheel is absolutely the same.

The 64000 is what I used on my previous trailer (2005) and my new one (2016). They will be fine.

The original ones don't seem to be the highest quality. They seem to be hollow or something as they will twist on themselves when one tries to apply to much pressure to them or if the socket is not on properly.

Thanks for this. Having the larger size (13/16") might be an issue as my wheels are hard enough to get a 3/4" socket on. I hate to open the package on these as then I cannot take them back. Just to try them and see if I can get a 13/16" socket in my wheel pocket..... Sheesh

Here is the wheel I have:
16 x 6 Aluminum Allied 870 Trailer Wheel 6 Lug with Center Cap and Free Ground Shipping.

Not familiar with those wheels, so Im no help on the clearance issue. I'm fine with the Sendel 16" wheels.

Not sure about Canada, but McGard sells direct and at pretty good prices in the US. You might check that. Amazon.ca has them too

The other brand of similar quality is Gorilla. Don't know what part number you are looking for, but you want 1/2-20, bulge cone seat nuts. I'm sure they have one as well.

Why do you need to new lug nuts on to see if a 13/16" socket will fit the opening? Try it over the old lug nuts.

Cheep style 'chrome cover'....cover rusts and loosens over time, can be very difficult to remove.

Solid McGard....they last & are made right here in WNY.

Just order the 64010 nuts from Amazon. They are well worth the cost. The OEM nuts are terrible. The first time I took a wheel off, three of the chrome covers screwed up. Please also invest in a decent quality 6 point socket. The typical 12 point socket is not your friend.

So after reading this and feeling stupid. I went out to the shop this morning and tried it. The 13/16" socket fits fine so I will go with the 64000 nuts as I have them in my hand.

While I'm feeling stupid, I have another question.... Should I jack the trailer up and take weight off the wheels to change (and torque) the lug nuts? I'm guessing it should not be necessary, but thought I would ask. Also what should I torque them to?

Thanks

Doug

No need to jack up..just take them off one at a time, snug the new ones on one at a time. Then go back and torque in a star pattern.

Please, "Do Not" torque your 1/2" lugs to 110-lbs. Torque 1/2" to "85-lbs" at the most. 110-lbs is for 9/16" lugs.

I can add further to that;
RV Travel.com had a neat suggestion last week:
Instead of using your fingers to slowly spin the nuts:.......
When spinning on/off the loosened nuts, use a battery drill/driver with an adapter for your socket. Just use it to spin off/on the nuts, then use your (calibrated) torque wrench afterwards; as above.
My 'Cloud has 3/4" nuts, and the spec calls for 110 ft.lbs., that's dry! No lube on the studs. If you do use lube, you will need to reduce the torque, and you had better know what your'e doing, or risk stud failure.

After torquing in the ' Star Pattern', then do a final' Round Robin' where you SLOWLY recheck each stud in the round circle. You may find that you will get a little more on the torque.
Then the protocol is to recheck after 50, 100, 200 Miles, or KM. and before each trip.
Then: "Let the Adventure Begin!"

2014 Airstream Manual calls for 110 for aluminum wheels and 100 for steel wheels.

Very interesting on the torque specs. What is the difference in Airstream wheels and car/pickup wheels????? .....I know, Airstream get the job of replacing broken studs.$$$$$$$$$
