Skype is also available for the iPhone. It is great if you are outside the US borders for calling back into the US or anywhere outside for that matter.

I don't have an iPhone, but I have a Droid Eris and use the Tapatalk android version. I use it all the time for accessing androidforums.com and really like it. I would love to be able to read airforums in Tapatalk.

Have't seen yelp mentioned yet. That's a good one for finding customer reviewed food, services etc. near you.

Gas Prices - Iphone app

Hi - On our last trip, my husband and I were really happy with the AAA Trip Tik Mobile - it told us locations of gas stations, whether or not there was diesel and, in some cases, if the station was RV accessible. Most stations also had their prices listed as well. We also used it to find fun things to do on the way to our destination.

I use gasbuddy. I haven't tried any other gas price apps, but I've gotten good results in CA with gb.

2011 Apps

Here's a list from the Chronicle, one of our local papers, of some great apps that debuted in 2011.

The best apps of 2011

In addition to this list, we really like Find My iPhone. App Store - Find My iPhone

It helps locate your iOS or Mac device without subscribing to MobileMe's $99/year service.

Hope everyone had a great 2011! Best wishes for a wonderful, tech savvy, web enabled, wireless mobility new year!

Gasbuddy +1
It will use the GPS inside the phone to find fuel near you, or you can plug in the town of your choice.
Pick a station and it will give you a photo, if available, and will give you turn by turn directions and a map to drive there.
And, it's FREE.

The app "iExit" is just super! I tried it on I-70 this week and it will replace the bulky "Next Exit" in our truck cab. It lets you pick your favorite stops by brand of fuel, notifies you of upcoming rest stops, tracks you in the direction you're traveling and notifies you when you're near a favorite type of store, restaurant, diesel or not, chosen by your own preferences. Best $.99 I've spent on our camper. Amazing and even recommended by Consumer Reports.

The best App I have found is Allstays Camp and RV. It gives you everything you could possibly need to know while traveling in your Airstream. Check it out! Plus it is available for iPhone and Android phones. We used it from St. Louis to New Jersey to Arkansas as a cross reference to our Rand McNally RV GPS. It gives far more info than the RM GPS. Well worth the money!

Gas Buddy- gas prices free by distance or price(in area)
Bible+1 (bible reference)
ScanLife (scanning those symbols for more info)
Bug Spray (electronic bug force field)
CLZ movies (reference to my movie collection)

Also have:

Army Survival (great guide to all things camping and outdoors)
Coleman Camp Recipes

FYI I have to admit that I have been leaning more toward using an iPad over the phone as a more recent user device. I can SEE it better.

App update

Like death and taxes, you can always count on new, improved apps. Here are some that I've found very useful:

DIGITS: calculator app that creates a "tape" on your screen

mSecure: password, data storage app that has a desktop version you can sync your iPhone version with. Not the cheapest, but extremely dependable, full-featured and easy to use.

eWeatherHD: amazing weather app with a slight learning curve

LOCATION: text or email your location on a map to a friend for meet-up, roadside assistance, etc.

ShopShop: Shopping list that lets you check off items you've bought; also allows you to change the order of items with drag-and-drop gesture. It remembers every item, so just by typing the first few letters, you can quickly choose the item to add to your current list.

CLEAR: Simple, uncluttered checklist app

FLIGHTSTATS: Easy-to-use air travel app that gives flight and airport status.
