My brother and I have had probably the same kinds of discussions on this, he's currently a Chem.E with BP and pretty apolitical, tho' he does tend to 'side' with the oil companies (imagine that...).

With the rise in demand from countries such as China & India does indeed drive up the prices, the extent itself of the increase (and timing) is not congruent nor are the profits despite arguments regarding the size of the companies involved. An interesting point he made though was that just as in the issue of global warming, each 'side' will provide whatever numbers/ justification needed to bolster their position and you can bet that the oil companies are not ever going to weaken their position. This is a cash cow of unbelievable proportions.

Valero energy is planning on focusing more on diesel because "that's where the profits are and since transportation is driven by diesel, this is a good market. Everything depends upon it". This was an interview in the San Antonio papers business section earlier this week.

What we have is a collaborative monopoly and the problem is, everything depends on it. I guess one could argue politics here using party cliches as logic, but this is really something that transcends party lines (because both sides have their hands in this bucket). Politics "solved" the "crisis" in the 70's...

It is exactly what it appears to be and we all are pretty helpless do really do anything about it except adjust to it. I do think however, that we can hold our representatives accountable or at least more "aware" through emails, calls and snail mail. So far, prices have risen to this point and as such, those that supply have had a free ride with little or no backlash. "Free markets" are NOT driven by the same laws as physics. They are easily manipulated. IMHO...

We had that silly restriction up here north of the Park in Livingston some time back, but I guess they lifted the $75 shut off when people like me just ran their cards twice.

I think diesel is a bit cheaper here than some other places, but with the F450 getting somewhere around 7 mpg towing, I just plain don't look at the prices anymore. I got 5.4 mpg last week in South Dakota towing into a crosswind, so I think that magical $1.00 fuel cost per mile is in my near term future.

Would you believe...

....that gas prices actually DROPPED 6 cents a gallon yesterday? All the way down to $3.809 at BJ's.

Diesel is way over $5.00.

But, back in the "made up" fuel shortage in the early 70's, the club did a survey.

The question was, "How much would you pay for fuel, before you would quit Airstreaming?"

The answer was surprising.

That survey came up with $5.00 per gallon, and that was 35 years ago.

So, the question now becomes the same.

How much will Airstream owners today, be willing to pay for fuel, before they would quit towing?

Andy

Well Connecticut made the National News last night as on average having the highest prices for gasoline in the lower 48. No big surprise to us, this morning on the way to the office the lowest for regular was Sunoco $4.26 and the highest was Shell at $4.49. I saw a station yesterday sellin regular for $4.15 and there was a line going down the road!

It's after Memorial Day and usually prices drop a bit. Crude is down, more than $10/bbl if I recall correctly and wholesale gas is going down a little too. Gas hasn't kept up with crude's price rise, so it'll stay up for a while, then drop slowly if past year's experience is duplicated.

the last time we had the roller coaster here, the prices dipped but never dropped as did the rest of the country. i have also noted that in most cases, mid grade is .10 a gallon over regular and premium is .20 over regular. so much for the old story about how premium costs more because it takes more oil to produce it!

Yesterday Diesel was over $5 a gallon.... today they simply took the sign down. I am sure they are afraid the customers might throw things! The rest of the prices, way to high!

RaceTrac dropped their price a penny yesterday. When that happens, usually, the next day the price will jump six pennies/gallon!

Passed a station yesterday here in San Luis Obispo (central Calif. coast) with regular for $4.45. Yikes! I NEVER thought I'd see gas at $4.50... now it's just around the corner.
