How times change. Out of curiosity I checked the first post in this thread from 2/14/2003:

Thanks-John
I'd be tickled beyond words for $1.65/gallon about now.

Weak dollar = high gas prices

I heard on the tube on the other day the dollar has half the value it had a couple of years ago. That makes crude oil cost twice as much, thus if the dollar hadn't been cheapened so much, gas would cost a lot less now.

It's been cheapened so American products sell better overseas, but that hasn't fixed the balance of payments problem—it's just as bad as it was a couple of years ago. And because of our massive annual debt, the dollar is just not worth as much either. The Federal Reserve has been printing money like a third world country to keep the economy going and bail out bankers who gave stupid loans that any rational person should have known were going to default. A debt ridden country that prints so much money that presses get hot always has a weak currency. So some people pay lower taxes, but every one else pays more for gas, food, products, etc.

The middle class got a few hundred dollar break on taxes, but all of it goes away at the gas pump, the grocery store and to buy foreign made products.

What a great deal! What a con job!

CNN reports it's $2.00/gallon in Mexico....
Last time I checked they use the same 'barrels' that we do...
just not the same 'Future' traders...

What was todays bid for August deliveries?

Under $600 annually, actually. It depends on the truck and the driver. The difference is nil when diesel is 50-cents more per gallon. As bad as my last gas truck was, the difference is less than that above. And since diesels will outwork ANY gas truck towing extra heavy, the re-sale is always good.

Paid $4.29 last nigh for Diesel near home, At work it is $4.34 - $4.39.
Regla going for $3.37 - 3.43

New twist, the "cheap" gas is leaving deposits on the sending unit for your gas gauge. Several reprots of fuel level guages not working due to build up...

Hi, I use bacon grease for my bicycle chain. At today's, and future prices, we are going to have to be creative.

Oil Rises More Than $3, Most in a Month, on a Report
Dumberg - 1 hour ago
By Art Stream, May 2 (Doomberg) -- Crude oil rose more than $3 a barrel in New York, the most in month, after a report showed that a "big bright light" appeared in the eastern sky at around 5:53am EST today.

Analyst's are cautious, but warn that "if this big bright light continues to rise in the eastern sky, crude prices will follow the trend." Known as the "Ra distraction" one analyst explained that this trend reverses itself once the big bright light is directly overhead, noting "crude prices continue to rise as the big bright light descends with the anticipation of it rising again the next morning".

Mobil, BP and Chevron continue to blame "The big bright light" for higher prices at the pump, explaining, " We have nothing to do with this big bright light"

Forecasters are waiting for the governments "morning light report" numbers which are due out around 5:56am EST.

Driving the last leg of my 1,563 mile trip yesterday--612 miles--I pulled into a gas station on I-81 in Virginia with my 2007 Tahoe tank on empty and the yellow warning light flashing. It is a 26 gallon tank and it took 25.006 gallons. When I looked at the total the pump read: $100.00 EXACTLY. (Then, I looked at the price per gallon--$3.99 an 9/10ths. I was so impressed that the pump stopped at exactly $100.00 that I got out the digital camera and took a close up photo, then another with the nozzle hanging out of the tank and the AS in the background. THE PRICE was for 87 Octane Regular.

Before you ask, the Tahoe has a digital readout of "instant economy" and "average fuel use" which I reset at the start of the trip. I got 10.1 towing a 22 ft 2007 AS and running between 64 when SL was 55 and 72 mph when SL was 65 or 70. Above 72 mph the "instant economy" dropped to 7 to 8 on the flats and 4 to 6 on hills.

This trip was another record for another reason---I wasn't paying attention and my first fill up came about 12 to 15 miles after the "low fuel" yellow warning light came on with a Beep, Beep. That next exit just didn't want to show up and I was sweating it out. Finally, as I went down the ramp, there was a gas station right there. Whew! I then proceeded to put 26.02 gallons into the 26 gallon tank!

Relative to my trip home mentioned yesterday mentioned in my above post, on Route 7 in New York about 10 miles from the Vermont border, my wife said, "Do we need gas? Let's get it here it's only $3.10. That's the lowest we've seen on the whole trip."

So we pulled in to the brightly lit station but only the side of the building with the Dunken Donuts shop was open. The pumps were off and the gas station door had a sign, "For Sale."

I ordered a cup of coffee and asked when the station had closed. "Two weeks before Christmas," was the answer. But the coffee was 99-cents, also the lowest I had seen on the trip.

Hi, it's crazy out there; I accidentally dropped a one dollar bill out of my pocket and was cited for littering!
