Get'n ready to take a 3 to 4 week vacation in June 08 to Yellowstone, Deadwood, Wyoming and points inbetween. Then back to California via Washington/Oregon.
Been watching the fuel prices. Especially with Diesel it's up to $4.07 or more in California. BUT, Looking to what is going on in the Airline industry, It still is cost effective when you have more then 1 person going.

I agree and I think the question is not whether to go somewhere, but how far to go. We want to the NW coast, so that could be 6,000 miles. My tried and true formula is: how many miles to the furthest point and triple it. Thus about 2,000 miles to Oregon coast, say Cannon Beach or Astoria, 2,000 back, and 2,000 more that happens somehow—I don't know how I drive all those extra miles, but I do. At 12 mpg, 500 gallons. Say $3.25 per gallon unleaded, perhaps optimistic, equals $1,625 on gas ($2,000 at $4 gas). We take a lot of food with us, so we've always saved on restaurants, but we still eat out from time to time, so estimate for us is saving maybe $25 per day on restaurants (we eat one meal, sometimes 2 in restaurants when traveling without a trailer, but we still have to buy food), $50 on motels, savings of $75 per day, means on a 25 day trip, save $1,875 on that, maybe more.
If we took the 4Runner, we can get around 22 mpg, thus 273 gallons, or $886.37 for gas, almost a $750 difference, so taking the A/S saves about $1,660. I don't know about plane trips—we haven't flown since 1999 since I spent 4 hours on the tarmack in Dallas and another plane was cancelled and all of them were late. The lousy service of the '90's is even worse now. We drive and see the country.
But, there's a lot to see, sometimes again, in the Rocky Mountain West close to home.

Restaurants, hotels, airfare, and everything else are increasing in price right along with the fuel, so Airstreaming will still make sense even with the inevitable $6 gas. Hotels, crowds, long lines at restaurants or airports, not sleeping in your own bed and crappy food are not a vacation. I've also spent hours stranded on the tarmac.
Looking at a post from five years ago, regular gas was around $1.50. Wonder what it's going to be in another five years.

And then------ just one food poisoning from eating out, or fancy hotel with bugs in the carpet makes the the whole thing priceless.

I agree with you, i could never do this trip if we had to stay in hotels and eat out everyday. Our 4-5 months on the road trip would cost to much for me. We also have two labs, try finding a place for them every night would be just about impossible. My wife and i both hate staying in hotels also. I am figuring 4 dollar gas for this trip as an average. Out west i'm sure by mid summer it will be at the very least 4 bucks.

Regular 87 is heading north of $3.70 per gal here in Northern Calif.
It has currently been going up several cents every 3 or 4 days around the Stockton-Lodi areas.
You won't see our lawmakers making any statements in favor of lowering these prices as the State gets wind fall Sales Tax profits as the prices rise!
I believe our domestic oil producers are charging what ever the local market will pay, with the world market prices as an excuse...while the oil being produced within the USA borders hasn't essentially changed in price for years...we consumers are being 'taken' for an ever increasing 'ride' for our vehicle fuels, while the producers keep 'raking' in HUGE profits! Just look at their quarterly reports...Billions and Billions in profits coming from the increasing pump prices, while their costs haven't changed to any great degree! I wonder how these executive 'banditos' sleep at night? Probably just fine, with all that cash in their mattress'!

I'm sure glad the oil companies get all those tax breaks so new oil can be found and the prices are kept down. After all, the US has 3% of world reserves and they would probably last a few months if fully developed. Thanks to Sen. Peter Dominick (R-NM) for fighting for all of us for getting those tax breaks to those poor oil companies a couple of years ago and then fighting to make sure they kept those tax breaks so there would be no money for tax credits for renewable and alternative fuels last year.
Now we take a 5 gallon gas can with us when we go to GJ so we don't have to drive the gas sucking TV there to fill it up—and we don't use the truck too often. Gas is generally 20¢ more per gallon out here than in GJ.
