Boy, it's disheartening looking at fuel prices on the first page of this link. I paid $4.09 for diesel this morning in north Florida. Disgusting.

I paid $3.66 for regular today. That is up over 75 cents a gallon in less than 6 weeks. The talking heads on the news this morning were claiming it was because the refineries are in the process of switching over to "summer" blend gas. I don't buy it; I think it is greed and nothing else.

Yesterday (02/18/13), regular unleaded was $3.459 at Costco in north Phoenix, AZ.
Gas was under $3.00 around the holidays (December 2012). Not looking forward to price increases this summer. We may be returning to 55 mph max cruise like during the 1973 oil embargo, to improve fuel mileage by around 20%.

We visited Death Valley NP from Feb. 10-17. On the 10th gas was $5.26/gallon. On the day we left (during the long weekend, when the park was busy) it had jumped to $5.85. One of the staff said the park employees usually gas up in Pahrump, NV. Gas there ranged from $3.57 to $3.69. Staying a few days in Shoshone, CA where gas is also over $5.00/gallon.

I definitely feel your pain!
We saw this last month at Furnace Creek...
Turned out, fuel in Beaty, NV (60-mile drive) just outside the park was $3.79/gal at the same time. My sense is that we'll be talking about the good times when gas cost less than FIVE BUCKS/GALLON! We're likely in for some heavy seas ahead.

Lower prices in some places are a function of whether the region has refineries and whether there is sufficient pipeline capacity to ship crude and refined fuels out of the area. Prices in Colorado are sometimes lower because of lack of pipeline capacity. I suspect Montana has the same advantage (see Kelvin's post above).
The Keystone pipeline could allow crude and/or refined product to be shipped out of the mountain states and then our prices would probably be the same as the rest of the country.
The gas war in Delta, Colorado, has subsided, but Maverick and Bradley fight it out while the supermarkets sit it out. Gas there is running 10-15˘ below Grand Junction, the reverse of the usual. Prices change several times a day. We tend toward Bradley because at Maverick you have to listen to a commercial for all the junk food they sell while you fill your tank. Just as obnoxious as the pumps at City Market (a Kroger chain) where they try to sell you a gas additive while you fill up, except on those, you can turn off the sound.

We left Death Valley/Shoshone CA a few days ago for a sojourn in the Mojave National Preserve. Gas at the nearest exit eastbound on I-40 was also over $5.00/gallon. A park ranger at Mojave blamed the high prices on California law-- apparently not just taxes, remoteness, or a captive audience, but some regulations about using gas produced in-state. We are now doing a gas/grocery/laundry run in Bullhead City, AZ where gas seems to run around $3.57 to $3.89. One issue we've encountered in the deserts of southeastern California is just sheer distance. Sure, gas is a lot cheaper in Pahrump, NV than at Furnace Creek in Death Valley. But a hundred-mile round trip eats into the savings.

I paid C$1.257 per litre to fill up on the weekend here. That's about US$4.86 a US gallon.

We hear you, Aage! We live close to the US border. Everyone we know (w/ one exception!) in our area routinely drives just over the border to gas up.

You guys are swimming in tar sand oil and your prices are still high!
I doubt bringing Keystone XL will do anything to lower our prices. It will just allow the oil companies to ship the oil overseas.
